538 WNBA Virtual All Star teams (i.e Analytics)

This analysis is a bit, erm, Storm-y.

One issue I have with it is the dartboard of different stats used to justify the inclusion for each player. It's pretty hard to tease out what story the stats are supposed to be telling here, and that's disappointing coming from 538.

My second issue is... an All Star game is a popularity contest. Is this something we really needs stats to decide? :D

I think realistically, it is some combination of merit and popularity so there is a place for trying to quantify merit. Don't care for their approach though. As you say, they often cherry pick between different metrics.
