40 seasons | The Boneyard

40 seasons

That means they won a National Championship on average every 3.6 seasons. Yes, there were clusters (three and four in a row) and droughts (like the current one) but no other program has put together those kinds of numbers. Truly legendary.

When you think about how frequently people change jobs today, even in the coaching profession, spending 40 years in the same job, while achieving the incredible level of success that Geno & CD have experienced, is absolutely incredible. I hope they both coach at UConn forever…..

We fans need to take a moment to reflect on how truly blessed we have been.

Beyond the wins and losses and league(s) and national championships, we have cheered for an amazing group of young women who have excelled on the court, in their classrooms and in life.

Geno and CD are legends. I doubt we will ever see this level of excellence again.

I agree 10000%. It has to be a record, like most of Uconn.s records, to be the longest partnership in Women's BB history and unbreakable. I REALLY hope Chris stays for the new 5 year contract. Do we know if she will? GO GENO!!!!! GO CHRIS!!!! 5 MORE YEARS!!!!!

UConn stats....Geno & Chris' record at UConn...
  • Overall won/loss record = 1,211 - 161 or 88.2% winning percentage.
  • First 9 seasons = 192-81 record (note 50% of total losses)
  • Season #10 (1994-95) = 35-0 & NCAA Champions (#1)
  • Next 9 seasons (1995 thru 2003-04) 305-22 record & 4 more NCAA Championships
  • Next 12 seasons = (2004-2015-16) 423-31 record & 6 more NCAA Championships
  • Last 8 seasons = (2016-2023-24) 256-27 record, but no NCAA Championships
  • Undefeated seasons =6 total
  • NCAA Championships = 11 total
UConn fans have been blessed for 40 years..!!

CD has always indicated that she’ll go when Geno goes. So it’s a pretty good bet that she’ll stick around for the duration of Geno’s current 5-yr deal.

During the next 4 years, I think CD is going to make Sarah a Maya clone on the court. Both great shooters upon arrival to Storrs, both hungry to excel and both lucky to have CD coaching the front court players. Maybe time has affected my memories of MM, but I think it's possible that SS is a better passer, but she'll have to prove it on the court.

Sarah and Chris are both lucky to have each other.

Nice but just as good by decade:
First 10 (1986-1995): 227-81 - 73.7% wins, FF 2 (20%), Championships 1

Next 10 (1996-2005): 330-30 - 91.7% wins, FF 6 (60%), Championships 4 (70 game winning streak)

Next 10 (2006-2015): 360-23 - 94.0% wins, FF 8 (80%), Championships 5 (90 game winning streak, first 37 games of 111)

Last 9 (2016-2024 ) 296-28 - 91.4% wins, FF 7 (of 8, 87.5%) Championships 1 (111 game winning streak)

Without looking at the years, guess when Maya Moore played.

Out of the 39 current years of play they have been in the NCAA Tournament for 35 of those years, would be 36 if the NCAA 2019-20 season tournament had been played. UConn has been in every one of them since the 1989 tournament. He has lost only twice in both the first (89, 93) or second (90/92) rounds and all four losses were in UConn's first 6 NCAA tournaments. So for the last 30 years of the tournament play UConn has made it to the Sweet Sixteen or higher, no other team in the NCAA can make that claim. Geno has stated many times that if CD was not his Associate Head Coach, UConn would most likely not have been as successful as they have been.

I heard somewhere a long time ago that CD was the first person to ever receive the title "Associate Head Coach". Can anyone verify this?
Interesting question. CD was hired in 1985 as an Assistant Coach and promoted to Associate Head Coach in 1988, 37 years ago. Whether she was the first person ever to receive that title, I do not know.

That is one of the things (out of many) why I have always admired about CD. She has been a straight shooter an open book from Day One. I can see her staying as well.

I've said before that what Geno (and Chris) and Jim Calhoun built at UConn, a former Yankee Conference school, are the two most remarkable accomplishments in the history of Div 1 NCAA sports. 17 National Championships and counting. A few days ago I crossed the MA/CT state line and saw the sign:

I remember on one of the ESPN telecast that one of announcers had stated that CD was the first Associate Head Coach in Women's basketball. I believe that it was against Tennessee, because they were talking about Pat was the second to do it. I can't remember the TN Associate Head Coach's name but they did say that CD was the first one.

Holly Warlick became the Associate HC at TN under Pat in 2003 after 17 years as an assistant coach.
