As the 2016 season approaches us, the Huskies are looking more and more solidified as a contender in the AAC. With experience at the necessary positions and well-rounded recruits coming in this season should be an exciting one.
As watch lists have been announced for the collegiate awards this year, you can expect the Huskies to be talked about a decent amount. 4 players are on 5 lists.
Jamar Summers- Bronko Nagurski Trophy (given by the Football writers association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club) for the best defensive player in the country. He is also on the list for the Bednarik Award (given by the Maxwell Football Club) as well, for the best defensive player in the country.
Bobby Puyol- Lou Groza Award (best kicker in the country)
Justin Wain- Ray Guy Award (best punter in the country)
Ryan Crozier- Rimington Trophy (best center in the country)
(In my opinion Newsome should be recognized for something but it's hard to do it for a player that plays at the most competitive position in college football)
It's hard to imagine that any of these players could bring home the hardware, but there is always hope. UConn already has a nationally recognized defense and Jamar Summers is the leader, not only for the secondary but for the whole unit. He would be the one that has the best shot to win, but it's a far stretch. It's hard to see Puyol winning anything if he can't hit a field goal longer than 40 yards. Even though he's did show signs of booting long ones last year. Crozier (the redshirt sophomore) did a good job protecting Cochran last year and another season with them two together can only lead to bigger and better things. Wain, as we know has had issues with kicking the ball long and pinning the opponent inside their own 20. But he had flashes of greatness (to be exaggerating) last year and hopefully another year leads to better punts. Even though these Huskies aren't in top contention it's good to see them getting individual recognition. The team looks in great shape and it should be a good year! Excited to not only see what these 4 players will do, but what the whole team can.
