As the new season approaches, evaluating the nearly unprecedented depth of talent on the Huskies’ roster, I’ve been giving some thought to the subject of which player is most likely to amass the greatest number of Kibitzer’s eponymous award. My initial guess would be Sarah, but, if you would indulge me, I’d like to mention a dark horse candidate. First, some history: I don’t know how many current posters remember Kib, but he was my favorite all-time fellow-poster on this forum. He was obviously a guy who had “been around” for a long time before we lost him, had been a combat veteran, had a towering intellect, and was an absolute master of the mother tongue. As I recall, when he came up with the idea for this award it was not eponymous at all, but his many admirers here made it so after his passing. Most importantly, in his mind, the number one Badass in any given game was not necessarily the highest scorer, nor could that player be identified via a quick scan of the box score. Rather, as he explained it, it might just as likely be a role player whose toughness and resilience on a given night might unpredictably generate the key daggers needed to carry the team to victory. I remember that Tina was a major inspiration for him, When Tina arrived on campus, her talent potential was obvious…the only problem was that she was a sweetheart, and only a shadow of what she would later become. Geno and CD worked so hard on her after her sophomore year, she mostly dropped the sweetheart profile and turned into a “beast,” a perpetual Bad Ass, and remains so. Please don’t scoff, but I think there is another player who has the physical attributes and the potential to be similarly transformed….and that is Jana. Her transformation is probably a year off, but I like her chances. Anxious to hear what you think.
