2026 Recruiting: Sara Okeke

At UConn, she will have to compete for time against Jana, Yanna, Olivia, Ice, and Gandy. UConn will have to figure out if they need another big or would be better off adding a reliable outside threat.

SC already added a big, and Kitts and Watkins would be coming back so new players are unlikely to start over those already on the team.

I am not sure if another player is needed for this class. UCONN has Morgan Cheli coming back next year, hopefully Ice will be available next season. Gandy should be seeing minutes next year along with Patterson. Olivia will see minutes next year. Tough decision whether to add another player or hold off for the 2027 class.

It never hurts to add talent. Maybe I'm overvaluing Sara Okeke, but when you have the opportunity to get a player with her demonstrated skill set and potential you usually take.

I was wondering why UConn is interested in Sara O. when you have Olivia coming in, Jana, Ice, Yanna and Gandy who will most probably be competing for 1 stating spot as the small ball is Geno preferred type of game...

While exact real-time rankings can fluctuate based on specific update cycles, her standing across major scouting platforms places her as an elite, five-star talent:

ESPN HoopGurlz: As of the most recent 2026 recruiting updates, Okeke is generally viewed as a top-tier recruit within the top 10 to 15 nationally. She is a critical piece in the national team rankings, with programs like UConn, South Carolina, and LSU vying for her commitment.
247Sports Composite: She has been ranked as high as No. 11 nationally and the No. 2 Center in her class.
Prep Girls Hoops: She has been ranked as the No. 6 prospect nationally and holds the No. 1 spot in Florida

I would wager that Geno would take one of those.

There is no doubt that Okeke is an outstanding talent, sure wish she would sign with the Huskies.

I think the why is because she could play the 4 and 5, only be behind Sarah and maybe Olivia in minutes played among bigs, and in essence be a significant upgrade over Ayanna, Ice and Gandy and a more minor one over Jana.

I would argue that the only big that has played up to Uconn's very high norms so far is Sarah. Injuries of course have played a big role with Ayanna and Ice, and Ice might not play for anybody next year, as Geno described a long path to recovery. Gandy was a project that was rated much lower than most Uconn recruits, and Jana was probably considered a top 10 recruit that has likely achieved a little less than was expected when she arrived.

Clearly Geno is not thrilled with what he is getting at the 5 from Serah or Jana, because he doesn't play them anywhere close to a combined 40 minutes a game, and he basically doesn't use a true backup 4 at all, using a 3, Blanca instead. We frequently use a 4 at the 5 (Sarah), a 3 at the 4 (Blanca), and a 2 at the 3 (Ash).

The current bigs have not done well enough to tempt Geno to even consider a "big" option. Okeke and the Big O, if as expected could change that. They can play together, with Okeke being the 5 on offense, and the 4 on the defensive end. that maximizes the skills of both players on each end of the floor, and would allow Sarah to be a 3 much more often, which we already know she could be great at. Blanca could play more at her natural 3 and even some at the 2 if desired.

Small ball could still be the choice, but the key to more traditional or big lineup as an option is dependent on the Big O being the real deal, Jana showing significant improvement, and the addition of a major big better than our potential returnees, either Okeke or a major portal addition IMO.

I think she might be tempted by USC. She would join a very talented class of 2026 with Saniya Hall and Sitaya Fagan. Next season, she could even be in the starting five with the return of Juju Watkins and Jazzy Davidson for her second season. A starting five that is certainly quite young, but of very high quality. I hope that UConn at least gets the chance to meet her.

Since Okeke moved to the US, her recruiting has really opened up. Initially, she visited Miami, Louisville & Indiana, but interest in TX, SC, USC, UConn and others, with potential visits after the HS season ends, appear to be in her plans.

Okeke is weighing all of her options. Good for her. Trying to read the tea leaves on Okeke is a fool’s errand. I suspect that we won’t know where she’s going until she announces.

As far as I can tell, visits with UK, Texas, IU, and USC. Unless there was a super secret visit with UConn, I don't think she's coming, and I'm ok with that, as you want players that want to play in Storrs.

Okeke has repeatedly indicated her intention to visit additional schools after her season ends at DME Academy in Daytona, which appears to be around March 20. If she shows up at the FF, that’ll cause some confusion, particularly if UConn, SC & TX are all participating.

Can a school provide tickets to the final four?

Can a coach even talk to a recruit during the final four?

Can a recruit at all during the tournament? Isn’t that a dead period?

1) No complimentary tickets during the NCT.
2) Yes but phone calls, texts, email, and DMs only. No in person contact during quiet or dead period. And no OVs to campus during the NCT.

I agree. With only about 6 weeks until the spring signing period, if UConn considered her a priority recruit they would have had her in for a OV by now to compete with the 4-5 schools that have already hosted her. The signing period begins only 11 days after the NCT (which is a dead recruiting period) and I don't believe they would cut it that close for a high level recruit with her potential. I'd bet that UConn had contact with Okeke quite awhile ago and that contact either wasn't satisfactory with Auriemma or else Okeke's interest level in UConn wasn't that high. That's all not a rumor, that is just my speculation.

How many schools can give you the very big chances to,
1. Get an, or several rings in your hand.
2. Have so many alumnus in WNBA.
Totally agree. Sara would have a great career at UCONN. She would be surrounded with hall of fame
coaches, McDonald’s all Americans and possibly a ring or two.

If she buys her own ticket, that’ll cause even more confusion…… 😎

Idk how reliable this source is, so take it with a grain salt. But if she is interested, I hope we sign her.

Looking back on that tweet from November, either things changed drastically in her recruitment, or it just had no foundation as she has yet to visit any of those four schools (LSU, South Carolina, Tennessee, and UConn) as of end of February. Instead, it's been Kentucky, Indiana, Texas, Ohio State, and Southern Cal who received official visits from Okeke. Still plenty of time for her to made additional visits.

Per Skim, and they've been pretty accurate, visits are almost done and a possible quick decision within the next week or so.

I'm not gonna predict she signs with Texas because I have zero inside info about recruitment, but the day after Okeke visited Texas (for the Kentucky game), Vic Schaefer had his weekly video teleconference with the media and when asked about the future, he stated the following: "We'll be bringing in 5 freshmen for next season, maybe 6 . . .". The "5" includes the 4 who signed in November, and the recent verbal from Joyce Isi Etute. So, I'm assuming the "6" was in reference to Okeke.

I think things may have changed because all the national recruiting services had UConn as a favorite to land her. They wouldn’t put something out there that they had not heard.

I didn't really follow her recruitment from the beginning when this thread was created; but, I don't see any tweets posted about predictions that UConn was the favorite. Perhaps they were pay sites. I do recall this tweet which kind of refuted that her Top 4 were UConn, LSU, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
