The beat writer is the one who discussed a pay cut, but a large donor confirmed hearing it.  I'm not at an insider level, so I have no idea.  The point was that, with one exception, none of the coaches in their next to last contract year were renewed as they typically would be.  He (the writer) pointed out that Barnes high salary probably was not sustainable in the financial reality the university is facing.  He suggested a pay cut with the difference in incentives; certainly CVS at Rutgers had that happen to her later in her career.

So yes, Barnes could leave, I doubt she would want to and I sincerely doubt - at this point - that the school wants her to.  The problem as you note is the high salary when the prior AD rewarded her for 2 big accomplishments with a future WNBA star, and we haven't had star power since.
