Pat Winkel hit .167 during the Cape Cod League regular season. Well, his bat sure seems to be heating up during the playoffs. That's his second home run during the post season.

Keene won last night 14-10. Joe Simeone did not have one of his standout games that he has had this summer, but he did ok. Simeone went 5 innings, 4 runs scored off of him, 2 of the runs were earned. The 2 unearned runs scored on a 2 out error in the 4th inning (this was after Simeone gave up a 2 run homer in that same inning). Simeone had 3 strikeouts, and gave up 7 hits and 2 walks. Simeone threw 103 pitches, this after throwing 20 pitches in an excellent 1.1 inning relief stint two nights earlier.

This was the fourth start in a row where Simeone has gone at least 5 innings. He has had 7 starts this summer, and he has gone 5 innings in 5 starts, and made it through 6 innings in 3 starts. He now has an ERA of 2.83 for the summer in 41.1 innings, with 66 strikeouts, 11 walks, and 36 hits. I would guess his performance this summer will get the UConn coaching staff to give him a good look as a possible weekend starter when fall ball starts up in Storrs next month.

Andrew Marrero had another quality appearance out of the pen to close out this game two nights ago. Marrero entered the game in the 8th inning with two runners on and one out, and held the runners on base as he got the final two outs of the inning. Overall, Marrero went 1.2 innings, with four strikeouts, one walk, and no hits allowed.

Summing up Marrero’s summer season, the incoming UConn freshmen gave up 5 runs in his first two appearances with Bristol which sent his ERA sky high. After those first two games, Marrero has had a nice run. He hasn’t given up a run in the next 5 games which total 6.2 innings. For the summer Marrero has pitched 8.2 innings, with 14 strikeouts, 4 walks, and 7 hits allowed (he gave up 5 hits and 2 walks in the first two games he appeared in this summer).

It's funny, but it seems anytime any UConn pitcher got mentioned as either starting a game or coming into a game during this summer in this thread, things did not go all that well for that pitcher in that appearance. Garrett Coe followed the same pattern today as he went 5.1 innings, gave up 3 earned runs (4 runs total), with 2 hits, 6 walks, and 4 strikeouts, and he also got the loss for the game. Still, Coe's ERA ended up at 2.31 for the summer season.

D1baseball.com has a prospect rundown on the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League, which includes a couple of UConn players:

>Connecticut RHP Karl Johnson (2020) worked exclusively in relief for Bourne, where he projects at the next level, punching out 20 and walking just three over 20.1 innings of work. He wields an upper-80s fastball with solid angle and some late jump and a low-80s slide piece that flashed some bite and bat-missing ability. His curve is a soft, low-70s offering that lakes consistent shape but will flash average with two-plane action matching his tilted slider.<

>Connecticut UTL Kyler Fedko was overmatched at the plate, striking out in almost a third of his 80 plate appearances while slashing .171/.200/.224 in his 25 games, but doesn’t turn 20 until the end of September and shows some defensive value in his versatility across the dirt and the grass.<

Long year for the young pup (big difference from high school/AAU)... he’s a grinder and will only use that for motivation.

>Caleb Wurster (UConn, 2020) totaled 11 appearances out of the Commodore bullpen this summer. The situational lefty presents a different look to hitters with a low, near sidearm slot. He showed good sink to his armside and a tough angle inside to right-handed batters with an 85-87 mph fastball. Also mixed a big breaking curveball with tight rotation at 75-78 mph.<

Ummmm... I'm getting older and have taken more than my fair share of knocks to the old bean getting in and out of ambulances over the years but did I miss something or is this news to everyone?

Two-way player Ben Casparius ready for future with Commodores and UCONN

>>The Ben Casparius who tantalized the ball in Connecticut continued that trend at UNC. In his freshman year, he batted .316 with 15 RBIs. On the hill, Casparius held a 1.69 ERA in 10 appearances. To add to his awesome stat line, he went two-for-five with three RBIs against Oregon State in game one of the College World Series.

A pretty impressive season on both ends for a natural position player.“He really is a position guy first and foremost,” Phil Casparius said. “People love the fact that he throws hard and has good off-speed stuff. But one of the things that has always been his calling card is that he is a baseball player. It is unique for guys to be that versatile and be both a pitcher and a position player.”

But in his sophomore season, the talent pool at North Carolina increased and it became difficult for Casparius to hit the field.“You’re never going be fully satisfied with everything and opportunities might be limited,” the right-hander said. “I just felt it was time to come a little bit closer to home and just get a restart.”

So, he did exactly that. Casparius decided to head home and transfer to the University of Connecticut. “UCONN is really everything that we could ask for as a family along with the great coaches,” Ben Casparius said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”<<

Casparius' UNC Career Stats (his last appearance/game for UNC was 4/21/19)

Borges: Westport’s Ben Casparius returns “home” after transferring from North Carolina to UConn

>>Casparius had committed to North Carolina his sophomore year at Staples, before UConn coach Jim Penders had the chance to get him in for a visit. After two seasons with the Tar Heels, however, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound two-way player will now be spending a lot more time on the UConn campus.

Casparius, who pitches and plays third base (and all over the infield, really), decided to transfer to UConn shortly after that visit in late-May. He has applied for a waiver from the NCAA to play right away and not have to sit out a season as a transfer, and the chances seem promising that he’ll be cleared.

“He’s uber-talented,” Penders said. “We just hope to be able to use him this year. He’s gonna have some competition over there, but third base was certainly a problem this past year. We didn’t find any real consistency over there. We have a significant need.”<<

This did make me chuckle:

>>The only remaining issue seems to be on the academic side. Casparius is a good student, but not all courses at UNC transfer to UConn. With that in mind, Casparius has been working hard in four accelerated, online courses this summer. He even cut short by about two weeks his summer ball season that started in the Cape Cod League and ended with the Ocean State Waves of the NECBL, so that he could return to his Westport home and fully concentrate on his studies.<<

>Connecticut 2B Christian Fedko (2020) slashed .271/.352/.364 with limited pop but solid feel for the barrel. Working with a high leg lift, Fedko produced hard contact when squaring the ball up but could have his timing disrupted with quality off-speed stuff. Fedko profiles as a Day Three target but could grow his value if he can show a steadier glove and a little more impact potential with the stick.<
