With the obvious effort to reel in some big time CA prospects maybe KO is trying to secure us a spot in the PAC-12...(end sarcasm)

On a serious note, happy to see us really going after some big time prospects. JC made a living on the under the radar kids, and it looks like KO is trying to get himself started with some big names. As long as it translates to some good basketball and successful seasons i'm all for it!

"I feel like were a little late to the party here.... We have so many offers out there I wonder who we r actually recruiting."

Question I saw on another site:
Do UConn fans worry that Ollie seems to be spreading himself and staff too thin? it seems like the Huskies are recruiting every player in the country. Good to work, but does it devalue their recruitment of guys when they seem to be throwing offers at every ranked player?

I would hope they are keying on 6-7 guys they have a real shot with. If he comes up goose eggs on the 2014 class then I'll question Ollie....if he lands 3 in top 60 he's a genius. I think he get's it done.

Unless Ollie got some insight that Johnson is interested in us why bother with the offer. I'm never confident with cali kids.

I hope he gets it done. 3 players in the top 60 would be ideal or 4 in the top 100 if enough Scholarships are avail ... I would just like to see him key in on a few players Such as LJ Peak & get an early commit

It's impossible to know what's really going on behind the scenes, but I do sometimes wonder the same thing. On the other hand, we don't hear a lot about L.J. Peak but he mentioned Uconn (and FSU) as going after him the hardest. And we've definitely keyed in on Carrington as well.

But who knows. Phil Nolan, DeAndre Daniels, Ryan Boatright - these guys came completely out of nowhere. There aren't too many things more unpredictable than recruiting, especially at Uconn.

One of the top tos guess said he has never seen a top tier coach offer this many top 100 kids

I'd like that! (as a SoCal resident). Actually, I think Ollie is trying to capitalize on his LA roots and tap into the rich local talent (yeah I'm talking basketball...not out of work actors ;) ).

Anyhow, it is surreal that UConn is now after Big Stanley. He has been the best overall player in his age-group in Orange County (and possibly LA) since he was like 3 years old. I coached against him when he was in the 5th grade a few times and my son played on a team (SoCal Tigers) with him in one tournament in 7th or 8th grade. He's now about 6'7". He is the man for Mater Dei, the traditional SoCal powerhouse team, the best team in the toughest league in the country (as currently rated by the Freeman rankings), so he is used to being in the spotlight. Has a superb handle for a kid that big. Very active. Knows the game. Gets to the cup at will. Excellent body control when finishing. Plays with a bit of an attitude (which is good). Not a great stroke, but adequate and improving. The only other negative I can possibly think of (and this is a bit of a stretch) is to say he isn't "clutch". He seems to find himself on the FT line in the final seconds of close games and I haven't seen him make one yet in that situation (then again, I haven't seen all his games).

His Mom (Coach Kay) is/was a coach of a local AAU squad known as the SoCal Tigers. She was a great player in her own right (Sports Hall of Fame at Jackson State, I think). She trained Stanley as a PG for many years which is why his handle is so good for a big man.

http://ny2lasports.com/article_one.aspx?articleid=1277 Johnson discusses schools. "“I talked to UCONN a couple weeks ago,” Johnson told NY2LASPORTS.COM Tuesday night. “We just talked a little bit. He said he was interested and he offered me a scholarship. I’ve heard some pretty good things about them. They have a new coach (Kevin Ollie). I’ve heard some good things about him from family and people I really trust. I just want to hear him out.”"

I'm sure a kid or two might prefer being the only kid pursued by a program for a position. But who wants a kid with an ego. I want a confident kid not a kid who needs to be treated with kid gloves. Most coaches don't want to put in the effort KO is putting into recruiting. Who knows how long KO can put this type of effort but I laud him. If KO was just offering than I would agree with the premise. But if he's establishing a relationship with the kids he's offered, I would bet it pays more dividends in the long term than just focusing on a few athletes.

So it depends on what KO is doing and not the numbers.

At this point, I am working under the assumption that any kid who targets a school for the values/integrity of the coach will have UConn high on their list. If family is making the call, Ollie is in the conversation.

Ollie is from Texas and played high school in California. Most people out west respect him a lot. His connection out west is very good in the upcoming years. The west is loaded with top tier talent these next few years.
