Nice job by Al.com giving a four year look back on recruiting rankings and how those teams fared this year.

Damn formatting got completely screwed up.

Just go to the link and see for yourself.

What I would REALLY like to see, that the recruiting sites would never provide, is the subscription fees from each of the fanbases.

I think one take away from that is that recruting matters, but so does coaching. Bad coaching has been the issue at USC despite having 2 number 1 classes and being #3 overall. If you read further and look at the rankings of players, I think that supports the idea that these rankings are better for evaluating skill players than they are for interior linemen. Yeah, Couandjo from Alabama was a 5 start, but most of the rest were 3 star recruits and Stork, the Florida State all American Center was a 3-star Tight End! that demonstrates a major weakness of the system in that players get moved around. A tight end recruit ends up a Center. Or to use a UConn example, a 2 star linebacker came to UConn and became a drafted pro fullback.

Coaching matters, but it still wont change the fact that Alabama, Notre Dame, etc. are all going to have highly ranked classes. This really is a chicken vs. egg kind of thing. Do highly ranked kids go to Alabama or do kids get highly ranked because they went to Alabama? You have a crap coach, who sucks at evaluating talent, or developing talent, and you get crap results even with highly ranked kids... see Notre Dame under Charlie Weis.... or Mike Shula at Alabama.

The irony is that every coach wants to know he has a great class, and wants others to think the class is unspectacular. While they'll never admit it, I'll bet there are any number of coaches that think their classes are over rated.
