Did we play that differently on D? I know AJ got more aggressive, but was that the only reason for the discrepancy? I’m not the BB guy many on here are, but it seemed like every little contact was called in the second half but not the first.

We were sitting close to the BYU basket in the 2nd half. Stewart and Ross did a great job on AJ in the first half, but AJ became more aggressive and Stewart and Ross were more tired in the second half resulting in more fouls.

A few things were factoring in..

Stewart started, Ross would spell him. So they were in/out and while in the first half they really got the better of AJ:

1. Once Keita was out they spread the offense even with two poor defenders being out there.
2. They were going for AJ isolations with 2 and the harm or doubles to kick it out to Saunders or Baker for 3.
3. Tarris had 7 pts when Keita went out; he finished with 21 so while BYU knew this was going to happen. They would gladly trade 2 pts for 3 back.
4. No Furphy - without a decently reliable Furphy as a 3rd wing so if Stewart or Ross either had fouls or exhaustion, Furphy could have given 2-3 minutes at a time for them both to rest. I'm guessing he could have gone, but guarding AJ would be tall given first game back.
5. When fouls mounted - Ross gets 4; Stewart has 4. Ross is defending AJ - of course AJ is going to try for the left to center dribble, get Ross going sideways to block the hoop, and turning to lower the shoulder and curl back to the left for the shot - he would make it and get the foul. All Ross can do is try to be straight up and stay on his feet to not get the 5th foul which he did. But really, when you have 4 fouls you just cannot be as aggressive on D.
6. Stewart was a liability last night. He couldn't score, he could only guard and while he did well defending he just isn't as fast reacting and nimble as Ross. Stew would be great against a 6'7" wing who is a step and a half slower than AJ for him to win an assignment if seems like. Also that missile 5 feet over Tarris' head on a press break - is his head in the game or what?

Keita being out helped them a ton with spacing and in coming back IMO. He was getting eaten alive by Reed on defense and didn't draw Reed away from the paint like some of the other bigs did. That was a horrid matchup for them going in, with Keita being a low-rent version of Reed. So I agree trading 2 for 3 was huge for them.

I disagree about point 6. Stewart did exactly what he should have done on defense. AJ just hit some really crazy shots. The refs did let AJ get away with that off arm shove, but they didn't call it all night and neither Stewart, nor Ross were stopping AJ when he was hitting fadeaways, or allowed to shove off. Offensively, I agree to an extent.

I wish hurley had gotten on the refs a LITTLE bit about the shoving.

On TV it seemed like a lot of close even phantom calls got whistled on us. A clear push off an a drive and questionable blocking call on a drive down the lane as well as a few others. Hurley bit his tongue the whole game. Can someone tell me if that brutal undercut on Tarris is just considered a regular foul? Man that was dangerous and looked intentional on the replay.

Credit to the BYU fans for making the trip. Showed well for the school.

Basically, the foul discrepancy was about even for the game. AJ playing more aggressive and Keita being out for the remainder of the game opened the court on the offensive end, add that with being in the bonus at around the 12 minute mark in the second half was the difference IMO.
