Someone check my math. 20 losses plus 11 championships equals 31 years, which goes back to 1989? Not counting this year, since they have not lost but also not won a championship, yet. Was that the first year they made the tournament, and they have made the tournament every year since then? Have they eve lost in the first round. Since they have made the sweet sixteen 27 years in a row, does that mean they didn't make it four times? Not necessarily, but I am definitely foggy on the years before 1991.

At the risk of being that guy, I believe Auriemma's NCAA record is 125-20. The discrepancy, I believe, is that though UConn got to the 2nd round in 1990, that was when the tournament field was 48 teams, and 16 teams got byes in the 1st round. UConn was one of them, and they lost the 2nd round game that year, thus 0-1 instead of 1-1.

EDIT - UConn also got to the FInal Four in 1991 (their 1st, as we all know). They also had a 1st rnd. bye that year, and so their record for that tournament was 3-1 (instead of 4-1 if playing all early rounds).

Noooooooo, never any problem with correcting a mistake!

CRUD $%^&@! :( I knew the 1990 record was 0-1, but missed on 1991. THANK YOU.

Your math is excellent - UConn's history in the NCAA's began with the '89 tournament. They lost their first games in both '89 and '90.

My own calculation has Pat Summitt's NCAA tournament record at 112-23. Her Lady Vol teams also participated in the NCAA's predecessor, the AIAW tournament, from 1977-1981 (The NCAA women's tournament began in 1982). As far as I was able to discern, her record in the AIAW was 12-6. Thus, Summitt's post-season record (not incl. SEC tournament) is 124-29.

I didn't include the AIAW years, but I did check all the NCAA tournaments and thought I counted correctly but somehow I messed up. You are correct. Here is the record:

1982 - 1993 was less than 64 teams so not a full 6 games for the higher seeded team winners. But 94-2012 was 64 teams 6 games to win it all: 5 titles during that period = 30-0, and her three previous titles were 5-0 so 45-0 in her NCs and 31 years - 8 NCs equals 23 losses.

After 1993 she lost in the NC 4 times so 20 wins in those tournaments, she lost in the semi's twice so another 8 wins, E8 loses 4 times so 12 wins, S16 loses 3x so 6 wins and one first round loss.
In total non-championship years of 64 team field = 46 wins plus 45 championship wins all time = 91

Non championship years between 1982 and 1993 wins: 82=3, 83=2, 84=4, 85=1, 86=3, 87=NC, 88=3, 89=NC, 90=2, 91=NC, 92=1, 93=2. Total wins in non championship less than 64 team years = 21
Total: 21+91=112-23.
NCAA record:
NC game 8-5
Semis 13-5
E818-7
S16 25-5
First/second round 30-1 (Ball St (12 seed) first round 2009)

Geno:
NC 11-0 (record wins)
Semi 11-10 (record games)
E8 21-5 (record games and wins)
S16 26-2 (record wins)
First/second round 29-4 (1989,1990,1992,1993 1-4 with 2 first round losses and 1 first round bye)

Uconn is 125
Pretty sure TN is 126 (Pat 112, Holly 13, and Kelly 1)
Holly 3 E8, 1 S16, 2 2nd round, 1 1st rnd = 9+2+1+1+0 = 13
Kelly 1 2nd round = 1

Uconn/Geno is 125-21 - the first FF in 1991 Uconn had a bye in the first round so won only a 2nd round a S16 and a E8 going 3-1 not 4-1. There were 48 teams from 1989-93 with 32 playing a first round and 16 teams getting a bye.
Edit in Red
Thought they had a bye in the 1992 year but was wrong - they won a first round game and lost the second in 1992

Auriemma is 125-21 in the NCAA tournament. ESPN is wrong. The 1st round byes in '90 and '91 were accounted for.

Summitt's post-season record in the NCAA's, last I checked, was 112-23. Including AIAW tournaments, I'm less certain on. AIAW had "regional qualifying rounds" that I'm uncertain whether UT participated in or if those games should even count. Was only able to ascertain AIAW national tournament results and found a record of 12-6. Lady Vol fans will likely have better info on those years. Summitt's AIAW teams got to that tournament's "Final Four" 4 out of the 5 years they participated, from 77 to 81. No titles, though. AIAW also had a consolation game for the semi-final losers that counts in the final tournament records.
