Thanks for the posting the highlights. I realize they're just a portion of the game, but there are some encouraging signs.
How did the overall flowof the offense look?
How did the help D look? This is usually one of the tougher parts of the game to come together for a team and with losing most of our front court, and the lack of depth, it's going to look scray throughout much of the season. I hope that's not the case.
To me, the flow of the offense was not good, especially in the first half. Neither Bazz or Boat were penetrating and creating opportunities that way. The ball mostly went around the perimeter. Omar hit a couple of 3's to get things going a bit, TO hit a 3, and Bazz hit a 3 with time running down at the end of the half to bring us to only being down by one point. In the second half, there was more ball movement, more pushing the ball, more pressure on D that creating some turnovers. Often the best offensive sets went through Tyler O. who did a very good job hitting cutters toward the basket. Omar did a good job getting open and often benefited from TO getting him the ball in good position. Boat was more active in the second half, hit a nice 3 behind a screen. The Huskies gradually pulled away throughout the second half, but we did not see good screening and fluid offensive sets (as yet). Giffey was very active, getting his hands on lots of balls and made one very nice, quick move inside to score. DD did a good job clearing rebounds, but we look very skinny up front outside of TO.
TO was good inside with help defense, hedging pretty well. They had a stocky center who got past TO a few times to score, but did not do much real damage. There were a few times when TO left his man to help with penetration, resulting in his man getting easy scores. There were several times when our guys were jumping for defensive rebounds with the shorter offensive player between them and the basket...not good. R.J. looked good in the time he got in the early part of the game, strong going to the hole. Then he did not seem to play again until late in the game. Nolan....deer in the headlights.
Another good sign was the way Tyler made some moves with the basketball, making a baseline hook. His limited quickness stops him from getting past his man to the basket. Omar did a lot of things well for a freshman on offense: hitting multiple 3's, cutting to get open, double clutching to get the foul and the shot off. He made a couple of turnovers in the first half in a row, with bad passes, but he played with confidence and composure rarely seen in a freshman. He gets his outside shot off quickly, but he has a low release point that will hurt his ability to get his shot off when closely guarded.
