Mike Aresco addresses UConn's departure, the impact on his American Athletic Conference moving forward

Fan support is also correlated to being on TV and having successful teams. In the BCS/non-BCS era, there were no TV deals outside of the BCS-focused structure that allowed most teams to maximize growth. It's why we saw Louisville, Cincinnati, and USF, all of a sudden become so much better on...

Mike Aresco addresses UConn's departure, the impact on his American Athletic Conference moving forward

Marquette, DePaul, Louisville, TCU, etc, were all in Conference USA too. What separates all those teams now (including Tulane) is the money. Money is EVERYTHING. The only "brand" that decides anything in college sports is infinite Ben Franklins. Money is why Butler is no longer a Horizon/A10...

2019 AAC Football Media Days - July 15th/16th in Newport RI

When fans comment on what TV terms they'd accept, you know fandom has jumped the shark. The new big east is on a 12 year deal. I know this will be an unpopular hot take but UConn's exit will help the AAC achieve certain benchmarks, and I think they are giddy over the prospects of a smaller...

Can UConn spearhead a new FBS FB Conference with NBE schools?

Consisting of A10 & NBE schools (both leagues have similar basketball set ups) united with the local indies. UConn Dayton (FBS Call up) Davidson (FBS Call up) Duquesne (FBS Call up) Rhode Island (FBS Call up) Georgetown (FBS Call up) Nova (FBS Call up) Butler (FBS Call up) Liberty UMASS OR...

UConn going broke a cautionary tale for UCF, USF and other Group of 5 schools (Mike Bianchi Orlando Sentinel Commentary)

Unfortunately, revenue and exposure matters. The former Big East was buoyed by football money and ESPN. The new Big East has 4 million and FS1. I think Mike Aresco has a point here: "Connecticut has expressed a desire of going back to a romanticized past that was the former Big East,” Aresco...

UConn going broke a cautionary tale for UCF, USF and other Group of 5 schools (Mike Bianchi Orlando Sentinel Commentary)

Well... Part of that "Net" is the value of ESPN linear vs Fox linear, and Fox ratings have been poo. If you get paid half the AAC contract (or even closer than that), for half the viewership - on a fledgling channel, you aren't really netting anything close to the value. Getting 11-12 million...

AAC commissioner discusses his league's football future and its sudden split with UConn

Why wouldn't UConn women's basketball revenue be split up (or be part of the package) in the AAC deal??? That's the one UConn sport that is producing... and its ladies basketball. Does that mean the sports the other members are carrying the load in stay with them?? For instance, UConn is a...

I doubt anyone else would cannibalize football unless they were in a budgetary camel clutch. It’s not like the old big east is an option.

Lol You drink and post? I know it’s not USF but UCF hosted Gameday this year in both college football and college basketball (actually it was Houston for MBB) but UCF held up their end. Those 2 schools have enrollment that approaches Arizona State. Those brands are pretty well embedded into the...

They follow all sports to a degree. Most Sports fans watch football and March Madness (the season not so much).

    Swimming in the hate

I know who Butler is but you rattle that off as a hoops fan. Most people who digest bracketology each March are casuals. They don’t GAF about also rans on certain years. To them Butler is Geoffrey on Fresh Prince.

I think you’ll be surprised then. I think you’ll find much fewer people who even know Butler is actually the name of a school.

    Swimming in the hate

You seem fixated on their school names but it’s a different day. USF joined the Big East in 2005 and has never had a branding issue. There is a reason the Florida schools are/were always at the top of the list of P5 candidates.

    Swimming in the hate

There is a good point there... but Hardaway is a unique case because he’s a celebrity. With all due respect, most of the AAC people are just celebrating their increased payout/shares. I think UConn people would be saying the same things if ECU voluntarily quit the league.

The guy who broke the story:

This story was DEAD ON BALLS ACCURATE. Independence is a charade. Benedict NEVER HAD A PLAN (for FB) because he didn’t need one, as the Providence source clearly stated. It’s all been a work. Orlavsky was right. He’s a shmuck. It’s just amazing to me that Benedict wasn’t more discreet. The...

Ben Criddle loves Mike Aresco (Aresco Interview)

These guys are awesome. The UConn talk is at 6:30 of the podcast. I don’t see BYU leaving independence either but I wonder if retraction is becoming a better strategy in light of how the Big 12 has done.

6/28/2019 - David Benedict (SiriusXM Full Ride Interview)

Actually, what I believe happened, is when the data came in and Benedict saw how much revenue Football generates as part of the AAC, his enlisted Herbst to try and get football an AAC spot... and have the BE & AAC contracts paying out. He either greatly overvalued UConn football... or...

6/28/2019 - David Benedict (SiriusXM Full Ride Interview)

In my personal opinion (considering the timing), I don't think the AAC TV deal had any influence. I suspect Benedict didn't have an idea of what the conference was going to get before he already set events in motion. Once the numbers came back, I think he had to go on the offensive to make his...

    Paging Jeff Jacobs...

This. It appears that the football schools drive value of their own, separate from basketball. Whether or not UConn is better off cutting off that revenue stream is conjecture. Fans on both sides are more interested in measuring johnsons. One group of fans is happy with playing for a...

If Dave Benedict Doesn't Achieve Something Substantial By End of July Should UConn HIre a Consulting Firm?

I'm still amazed at how this story broke... This random website nobody has ever heard of comes out with the story... UMass offers a blueprint for UConn’s potential football future (Paul Doyle - Hearst)

I wonder if UConn can get a "Notre Dame" type deal with another conference. UConn can play 5 conference members of said conference each year.. (perhaps a couple MBB games) In return, UConn has entry into their Bowl tie-ins. That would alleviate scheduling and gain bowl entry.

UMass offers a blueprint for UConn’s potential football future (Paul Doyle - Hearst)

I'm not sure that's a compliment. For BYU, Independence has not yielded anything. They barely made the potato bowl. When they were in the Original MWC, they actually had buzz. Sure it was the Frogs and the Utes doing the heavy lifting in football but that buoyed BYU football.

AAC commissioner discusses his league's football future and its sudden split with UConn

I think he's probably talking about letting UConn host both the Mens and Womens hoops tournaments. UConn apparently was also one of the main voices behind an Olympics-sports addition in 2017. Conference offices stayed in the Northeast until the upcoming move.
