Don't shed too many tears for 18-21 year olds who have the privilege to play a sport they love with coaches, trainers, good facilities, plus comodious college accomodation and board (in many cases) AND... a scholarship. No matter the conference it's all a pretty good deal.
No no no.... Go back to baseball allowing runner to run through first base, the several rule changes to protect quarterbacks, the rules protecting keepers in soccer, the introduction of flagrant fouls in basketball. I won't think of many of them, but introducing rules to reduce injury are...
Not looking at stats, but from memory Ashlyn is the player Geno pretty consistently plays for the most minutes - and that's been ever since she's been a starter. It's not just her superb conditioning - she has a rare motor. I see others tire, need a blow and or lose focus. Never Ashlynn - as...
Perhaps I'm just another grumpy old man - and yet I wonder... When and how did it become common practice for good people to think nothing of circumventing paywalls? We value an article but don't see a reason to compensate the author or publisher for their work and expense. To my way of...
Hosted a Ukranian "New Americans" couple and their three year old in our home for their first week in the USA. Saturday (4/15) we moved them into the apartment our sponsorship group found for them. Full on Google Translate all week. Worked out wonderfully well.
Excellent news for UConn. I hope that in one more year with Geno, Paige & co she can learn how to apply her chart-topping athleticism in every game circumstance. She could be so darned good.
Aubrey! 4/4, 1/1, 2/3, 4OR, 3DR, 4 assists, 1TO, 4 steals. And there is no player quicker to a loose ball or rebound - she has both the reaction time and the quickness/speed.
As I watch games I wonder whether the practice players ball-hawk and clog up the paint on entry passes or drives. We know there are too many turnovers and blocked shots - do they also experience those in practices where there are opportunities to reset and do better?
I am happy I opened this thread. Been warned now - I'll skip the game thread. I sometimes wonder how many posters experience the withering critique some feel appropriate to articulate here. Let's carry on with celebrations of a solid win and a remarkable, inspiring year for UConn WBB. How...
Great interview. Thanks for posting.
A bit off track, but the skill Ines has that brings a cheer in our TV room are her snap passes (is that the right term?). She receives a pass and fires a dime in a split second - one motion. I remember two from the game last evening. Perhaps that relates...
Thanks for this! Bears replay. UConn WBB folklore henceforth. Likely a unique sequence of questions and responses across all athletes, all sports, all universities forever.
but...but...but... they do score points in the course of a game, don't they? Some player is getting the ball through the hoop. What am I missing here? Must be moments an on time, on point pass would facilitate scoring - no? Or maybe they're all offensive rebound put backs or off the dribble...
Great synopsis, BlueSkyGLW! Thanks.
One tiny edit to suggest. Appears that Ayanna IS a 'force on the boards' with 17+ rebounds/40 minutes and half of those offensive. Also she is notably cool at the foul line (5/6) for a freshman getting limited playing time.
This is more a pro-player development league. It's not rec-ball and so not about parents watching. As I watch the games I infer Geno is working on team & player development right up to the last 4 minutes of a blowout. He'll move his focus to the halfcourt game with a comfortable lead, but...
Dorka. No question. Caroline will start over Aubrey very soon if Dorka isn't back. After that I expect her to start over Lou. After the first few weeks of the season we will, God willing, have a relative embarassment of talent on the bench who will each play significant minutes. Ayanna is...
It's mighty clear to those who listen that Geno thinks Nika his floor leader. Her teammates agree at every opportunity. If/when Caroline comes back to form we may have 6 other players he'd be happy to start. As I read it, there's no replacing Azzi or Aaliyah (duh...) If so two spots across...
Good line Bigboote!. Happens regularly. Might be "rifled another long assist to Aubrey, Aaliyah, Azzi or Lou" Praying that Caroline will be on that list soon.
I'll take Nika, Paige, Azzi. Dollars to donuts Geno would too. Lou is a great addition, and critical especially until Caroline is full strength, by I don't think she'd start over Nika or will later over Caroline. Aubrey took her off the floor for the second half versus Texas.
They were 11/19 from three and 39/69 overall yesterday. So agreeing with above - anticipate the kind of game that gets adrenaline up for fans. Wonderful to start the season with this level of competition - we've been waiting many months
Thanks -when I checked a cell I could see references were transposed. I was able to make pne line right and copy it to the others. Great work - and will be more interesting each week.
thanks

I believe you miss Geno's sense of humor. Watch the timing on that addendum. The players and coaches appear to agree that she is team leader on the floor - it's not about one game or any specific opponent.
I thought it was Aubrey's play that kept Lou out. We saw others play major minutes with three fouls. Aubrey was a terrific wing in all the minutes she played - much improved from two years ago especially in her participation in offensive flow.
It's a challenge for Lou to play full on high...
