UCONN - UNC Post game thread

Re "Too much passing. . ." I believe I'm seeing too much perimeter passing from our players as they are setting up their offense, passes that do not pose threats to defenses and/or get the ball to a Uconn player in a position to make defensive opponents move and thereby open up lanes for Uconn...

Your first paragraph equates failure to achieve a result with insufficient effort. Not a fair "proof."

Huskies Have A Little Break: What Needs To Change Before Texas?

Alas, I haven't seen Amari doing much of anything (offensive or defensive) "fighting for the ball," "defending the rim" or "grabbing" rebounds. At both ends of the court, she seems tentative and out of effective position.

UConn vs NC State is on ABC tomorrow at 3:00

Alas, my grand-daughter is making her acting debut at a local theatre (Portland, Maine) at game time. Can I record the Uconn-NC State game on ABC while I'm away from home? If not, when, where, and how can I find a replay to watch?

'This is gonna be her year': UConn eager to have a fully healthy Caroline Ducharme

Re: rubymaie4 I coached long enough (basketball- male, female; football; baseball; golf) to see a wide spectrum of coaching behaviors, and I'm glad to say that while I've seen some nasty, self-serving coaches for whom sportsmanship got in the way of "winning," they were a distinctly minor...

Jana - In Madrid - FIBA Games

I recall quite vividly Geno's frustration with Tina, who got schooled by opponents' bigs, and his assertion that UConn would be a serious contender for the national championship ONLY if she reached her potential. Basically, he put the fate of the entire team on her shoulders. I think that might...

    Geno Mic'd Up

Using the elbow to fend off a defender or clear a path as she drives . . . is that strictly legal? I'm not sure about that.

    The Last Word

"Finesse" is the right word, and it's being replaced more and more with the men's game's reliance on power and muscle, becoming more and more a contact sport—more grabbing, holding, bodying up, and other forms of contact— less and less an exercise in finesse, timing, etc. It was particularly...

Geno: we’re going to be hard to get a shot off against

This is one of the best analyses that I have read of the underlying problem of this season's offensive execution. Well done!

"Teams are catching UCONN with bad D switching or no communication on the switch." Sad to say, that's too true, and it costs us dearly.

I thought Patterson gave UConn some pretty good minutes off the bench

I thought she was given some opportunities earlier in the season-- not copiously-- but she looked lost out there. Today, much better, which should give her more confidence and more clarity on where to be and how to use both the opportunities and her particular talents.

    St Johns Postgame Thread

How often did Nika (or anyone else) get into the lane either by dribble penetration or by cutting into it for a pass, and then take a jump shot of 15' or less? That's one thing St Johns did . . . all too often.

That particular problem— very un-Uconn-- has been true since injuries have decimated the team.

    UCONN-Creighton Post game thread

Yes, there were far too many uncharacteristic and defensive errors, with defenders either guarding the wrong opponent, or not making the right switch, or not seeming to know where the ball was. In many of those cases the Creighton player was wide open for a 3-pointer, or mismatched on the Uconn...

    UCONN - Georgetown Post-game thread

Yes, the need is there, but where is your evidence that "they can play a quarter," or for any other time span? How can you be "sure"? Is there some medical evidence you can share?

    Where's THAT Dorka?

Damn, sure sounds like bashing. Dorka is not the most athletic or the strongest or the greatest leaper on the court, but your cut job on her makes me wonder just how "large" you are.

    Geno, let's not basketball anymore!

Fellow "old dude," this is an excellent summary/analysis of the unfortunate hyper-physical transition from hand checking to body checking that inhibits offensive movement and raises welts and bruises. And turns basketball into a form of assault.

L-o-o-n-g ago II stopped attending or watching men's pro basketball for the reasons enumerated above. Then gave up on men's college basketball for the same reason. That's after coaching boy's and then girl's hoops for close to 35 years, the last of them in the New England prepschool leagues...

    UConn-South Carolina postgame thread

Yes, finding and blocking out an opponent in a zone defense is more challenging, but can be stressed and coached to better execution than is usually practiced, even by very good teams. Not many teams/players box out well . . . sad fact. Surely you jest!

"Until then we have to figure out a way to not put ourselves in positions of picking up our dribble, which has led to poor passes, and TO's." Right on, Tony. And picking up the dribble often comes from aimless movement on offense without seeing openings and teammates movements, screens, etc.

    MD Postgame Thread

For all the explanations for our loss vs. Maryland, Zinethar's observation make the most sense to me. Yes, several of our "starters" were MIA's because of injuries, but that meant that players who remained were not veterans and were relatively new to each other. And that meant playing with...

    CD discusses Amari DeBerry

I will add that in three games this season I saw significantly greater levels of activity and effort from Amari. Previewing NC State / UConn game

Re: the upcoming game vs. NC State. I don't have detailed stats for our game vs. Texss, but it seems that Azzi's opportunities to attempt and/or make 3's were relatively restricted in the first half compared to the second half. Why? Because coordination between her movements and her teammates'...

I liked what I saw short and sweet

From what I have seen thus far (not very much) both Ayanna and Aubrey rely almost entirely on their strength and athleticism: they are accustomed to out-quick and out-leap their opponents for rebounds. However, they could learn to add some finesse after pulling down offensive rebounds-- pump...
