WW2 movies from the 1940's......

A few I remember.....

Sahara....1943
Air Force.....1943
Destination Tokyo....1943
Wake Island.....1942
Casablanca......1943
Bataan.....1943
The Flying Tigers.....1942
The Sands of Iwo Jima.....1949

Sahara (Bogart was never better) will always be my favorite with Air Force and Wake Island close 2nd's.

Casablanca is a great movie and certainly one of my favorites, but it really doesn't fit into that list.

I hear ya, Casablanca is not a war movie per se, but takes place during the early war years, and given it's overall respect as a film I included it for the simple reason if I hadn't someone would have said "how could you leave out Casablanca"? Lol.

Casablanca is a great movie and certainly one of my favorites, but it really doesn't fit into that list.

They Were Expendable (1945) - Another great movie directed by John Ford.

I was never a Bogart fan until I saw "Sahara". Maybe his best single performance, although "The African Queen" fans might argue that.

I've been a big Bogart fan since my days at UConn. As for his best performance, fans of "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" may argue for that one as well. Bogart playing a man degenerating and going off his nut is a sight to behold, but he was just a terrific actor overall.

My father in-law reminded me of another one from the 1940's I had forgotten about, "Battleground", starring Van Johnson, John Hodiak, and a young Ricardo Montalban.

Stalag 17, The Great Escape and Bridge on the River Kwai are their own sub category, but belong on the list.

I like another Holden film The Devils Brigade as well. Probably need to add The Dirty Dozen in here as well.

All good world war 2 movies but none are of 1940's vintage.

It may be from the 1950s but Stalag 17 is great.

Had these two as double feature plus 14 cartoons at the old Norwalk theatre. Best day ever.

I love both Stalag 17 and The Great Escape. Stalag 17 ranks with Billy Wilder's best films, and that is saying something, considering he made a bunch of great movies.
