Final score UConn 9 - 3 winners. Ferriter, Mazzilli and Yavarone 2 hits each. Ward pitches 7 innings giving up 3 runs 2 earned. That makes it 5 in a row and first weekend sweep of season.

Penders teams have always been aggressive on the base paths. If you're new to UConn baseball, get used to them giving away outs on the bases. They also steal runs on the bases. I would be interested to see how many 1st inning runs they get this year from Ferriter getting on via a 1B or BB, stealing second, advancing on an out and scoring on another out.

I've been following UConn baseball fairly closely for the last few years now, so I'm I'm used to it, even though the pick offs and caught stealing third base drive me a bit batty. In my mind stealing third is not a good percentage play unless you are making it well over 90% of the time, which I don't believe they do. Still, despite this over aggressiveness in my mind, there is no doubt in my mind that Penders and his methods have done wonders for the program. I hope he is at UConn for a very long time to come.

I believe all the Stetson runs were scored in the 7th inning. Ward sounded very good in the first 6 innings, with only a bout or two of wildness to contend with in that time. It really sounds like he is getting back to his old form before he had the injury last year.

It seems to me that the fielding is much improved from last year. Last year they found all sorts of ways to compound their fielding mistakes. This year they have had their share of errors, but they don't seem to be compounded by losing their composure over them.

Our RPI is now up to 81. As I stated above the RPI is not that accurate this early in the season. Looking at the Big East standings, Louisville is in first place with a 9 - 2 record and their RPI is 157. St. Johns is 1 - 10 but their RPI is better than Louisville's at 145.

I wouldn't give RPI a thought until about 20 games into the season. Having said that, it's still fun to look at.

As far as our remaining 'Other games' go, we have to go 5-5 to hit that 11-8 mark. We have 3 games against Sam Houston, Presbyterian and George Mason along with a single game of College of Charleston. 5 wins should be manageable with a goal of 6 being realistic and 7 being very successful. I believe Sam Houston has a good team but we should have the edge against the other 3.

I've been looking at the RPI as well for the fun of it as well. I'm not sure how serious you can take it this early in the season when it has Brown ranked at No. 22. Twenty games into the season would definitely provide a better measuring stick.

I can't speak for this year, but the College of Charleston always seems to have a pretty good team as well. Seems to me that the goal at this stage would be to go at least 6-4 in these games. Seven or more wins would be terrific.

I would say a 6-4 record would be good. We should take 2 from the Blue Hose and George Mason. SHS will be trickier, but are very beatable and have played below expectations. I am hoping for a 12-7 OOC record.

Pretty good start to the year, though CMU and Stetson suck. We have 4 quality wins.

Coach was not happy with "stupid" baserunning this weekend. Wants to stay aggressive but limit the dumb mistakes on the bases.

This weekend's 3 games series with Sam Houston State should be an interesting test for our team. They currently have a RPI of 61 and have beaten both Texas and Texas State ( NCAA tourney teams last year). They made the NCAA last year ( winning 40 games). Also these are considered away games , as opposed to neutral site games, so wins would be an extra help to our RPI. Always hoping for a sweep but a 2 - 1 weekend would be a great success.

Off to UConn hoops game at Gampel. Will not be able to post any updates till later this afternoon. They will be playing 2 today (starting at 1:00 ) instead of 1 today and 1 tomorrow ( weather ? ). I will take a split today, but getting 2 would be giant ( possibly crack the top 25 rankings). Even though we won , we did not play well yesterday. Also a little concerned about Ryan Moore's shoulder. Heard last week from one of his family members that it was sore and would not be playing last week. Penders made some comment about how he is being careful with him. He should be a very important part of this team. Hope it is just a minor set back. Go Huskies.

Just got back from hoop game. What a great way to end the season. Don't know much about the baseball game except that we won. Lets get the sweep.

Won 2 of 3 this weekend on the road against a team with a very solid RPI. Weather permitting need to win the 2 in state games this week. We have 7 more "other" games this year. Four of them next weekend ( Fri - Tues) against teams with very high RPI's ( 3 games vs Presbyterien RPI of 6, 1 vs College of Charleston RPI of 39 ). Happy with start of season.

For UConn to get to the 40 win mark we need to win .667% of our games ( total of 60 ). We are on track with a 8 - 4 record ( .667%). We have 6 more games before the BE season starts. Four games away vs high RPI teams and 2 vs in state teams with RPI's in the low 200's. At minimum I would like to see us go 4 - 2. That would put us at 12 - 6 for the year, and keep us at the magic .667 winning %.

Just an FYI once the RPIs settle themselves out Presbyterian will not be anywhere near the top 50 as they just dont play in a conference to maintain that lofty ranking and up to this point they have no wins that can be considered anywhere near quality. Just in that regard we need to be careful in looking at some of these early season games as resume builders until we let the RPI's shake out and normalize themselves. On the other hand I think that those 2 wins (so upset we couldnt get the sweep) against SHSU are going to be quality wins at the end of the season.

Agree with you 100% that the RPI needs to settle before we truly consider them big wins. But they are away games which I believe help the RPI, and also keeps us on track to the 40 win season. It seems from the little research i have done that a combo of 40 or more wins and an RPI of 60 or less gets you in ( at least for the last 2 years). So far so good.

If we get to 40 wins our RPI will probably be better than 60. If not it will almost definitely be in that range. There's nothing we can do about cheap wins hurting our RPI. We just need to make sure they are cheap wins and not horrible losses.

Was not able to follow game today so can't comment much on game. Quickly looking at box score it looks like Sienna is batting 4th and went 5 for 5.

Overall record 9 - 4 and RPI up to 27. Next 4 games are away against Presbyterian ( RPI now at 51 ) and College of Charleston ( RPI at 31). A 2 -2 weekend would be ok but hoping for 3 of 4. If we do have a 3 -1 weekend we will have a very good chance of being ranked.

On a side note the CCSU baseball team started 3 kids from Bristol. At catcher Connor Fitzsimmons ( fr) , at 2b Nick Palmisano (sr) and at 1 st Tyler McIntyre (sr). McIntyre is a very good player, someone who has a shot at the next level. This year he is batting .471 ( 16 - 34), with 4 doubles , 1 triple and 1 hr. He went 2 for 5 today with a homer and a double. He played 3 years ago for the UConn Avery Point team that I believe finished 2nd in the JC version of the baseball college world series. Tyler played first base on that team and was named to the college world series all tourney team.
