Let's see how the the defensive stats rank and what they tell us about this season. 2015 stats are in ( ). These are the FBS rankings of 128 schools.

Scoring defense: 46th (15th)
Total defense: 55th (33rd)
Rushing defense: 35th (60th)
Passing defense: 100th (20th)
3rd down conversion defense: 96th (80th)
4th down conversion defense: 23rd (20th)
Red zone defense: 4th (7th)
Team tackles for a loss: 121st (101st)
Team sacks: 111th (97th)
Turnover gained: 117th (24th)
Passes Intercepted: 105th (12th)

So far this season, the passing defense has taken a step back from last year. We are allowing more passing yards per game and we are not making interceptions like last year. The rest of the stats are very similar to last year. Decent defense. Allow the opponent to convert on 3rd down, but not on 4th. Very good red zone defense. Few tackles for loss or sacks. This is a bend, but not break Diaco defense. It has worked in the past, but right now, the defense needs some adjustments.

We are getting about 1 fewer interception per game this year. Think about it. If we got 1 more interception in each of our 4 games, we are probably 4-0 right now.

Diaco needs to add a true nickel package to the D. We are getting burned threw the air many ways. Nickel should help. Our base D is on the field too often allowing the opposition to get comfortable running their plays designed specficaly to exploit our repetitive D.

In other words, we rarely give the opposition a different look on D.

Bend-don't-break works better when (1) you get selectively aggressive, particularly in rushing the passer, and (2) you don't give up big plays.

The passing defense stats are skewed a little by the fact the we played Navy. We are actually worse. Navy has the second worst rated passing offense in the nation (Army is the worst). I think we got a preview of how bad our pass is defense when Maine shredded it in the first game. I think our wins and losses for the rest of the season will dependent on if the opponent is a run dominant or pass dominant team. I think we defend the run pretty well.
