"First, Quinnipiac coach Rand Pecknold turned down the head coaching job at Massachusetts. Then Friday, Holy Cross head coach Paul Pearl reportedly rejected a job offer from UMass, according to the Worcester Telagram and Gazette. The report states Pearl was offered the position earlier this week. Massachusetts is still in search of a replacement for Don “Toot” Cahoon, who stepped down last month."
UMass bungled the search from the beginning by only going after current head coaches as candidates. They were not looking at assistants. QU to UMass is a lateral move, then they got egg all over their face when the Holy Cross guy turned them down. They also tried to get the associate from BC, but that's more or less a backwards move from there to UMass. Now they just look like complete fools, but I think they may have found a guy. Either way, this is the book on how not to hire a coach.
Just announced - AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Director of Athletics John McCutcheon has named John Micheletto as the new men's ice hockey head coach as announced on Monday afternoon. Micheletto is a 21-year coaching veteran who has spent the last nine years at Hockey East rival Vermont including the past six seasons as associate head coach. He is the 13th head coach in UMass' program history and replaces Don "Toot" Cahoon who stepped down in mid-June.
Very much a "best we could get" hire, taking the associate from the team that finished waaaay dead last in the conference last year, and was one of the worst teams in the country.
