UConn baseball 3/2/12

We lead an OK Lipscomb team 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning. The UNC transfer (a redshirt freshman named Jordan Tabakman) pitched very well today for 5 innings and Jolin has been solid in relief. We have completely dominated statistically so the score is actually a slight disappointment. Hopefully we will hold on.

We play Mississippi State tonight. They have lost to Washington State and Memphis so far this year so they are not unbeatable with Ward on the mound. It'd be nice to get to .500.

Between Tabakman, Jolin, & Oberg they limited Lipscome to only 3 hits. It'll be very interesting to see how Ward fares vs Miss. State.
Only negative is UConn had 14 hits but could only plate 4.

Baseball is the toughest mental game around. It's easy to let things pile up on you like these bad losses. The ability to bounce back says a lot about a team's character. Last year the Big East Tournament was brutally bad and they lost their opening NCAA game only to bounce back and win the regional so I won't give up hope yet. Of course that was a different group of players but I won't be so quick to rush to the judgment that these guys are choke artists.

I would have called the last group of guys choke artists while I was driving home from Clearwater last year but they proved me wrong.

Two things are killing this team right now. Obviously fielding but also doing the little things. How many times this year have they had a guy on third and less than 2 outs and they can push the run across. In the Lipscomb game they left 16 men on base and even in the Miss State game they had a few chances to really put the game away and didn't.

It's not his fault, but you can't tell me you aren't seeing a bit of a pattern here. Early season games with 389 errors in critical situations, Big East Tournament games...

He hasn't pitched at all so I assume it's an undisclosed or unpublicized injury. An 8 game (minimum, to this point) suspension probably would have warranted an announcement of some sort.

This team is just not getting the big hit when they need it right now. Inpatience at the plate as well. Mazzilli seems to be swinging alot on the first pitch and then last inning with the bases loaded and the pitcher already having walked a batter, hitting a batter and throwing a wild pitch, ferriter swings at the first pitch and ends the inning. You have to make the pitcher throw a strike.

It's always gonna be tough to get a win against an SEC team on the road. That's why you need to win games when you have leads late like last night.
