If coach Calhoun is planning on coming back he should make the announcement that he is planning on coaching for the next 2 seasons at minimum. This would allow our recruiting to stop the bloodflow and get back on track for 2013-14. A press conference showing strength is what is needed for the program, a reaffirmation that we will beback stronger than ever. He needs to on the oifensive, and increase KO's role to co-assistant head coach. This saves Blaney's face as everyone knows he's not inheriting the job. in the meantime they can show recruits that a 13 year NBA vet and assistant is in the wings in case anything changes and stability is insured. Recruits don't want to have a coach search go on while they are in the program for 1 or 2 seasons. I'm conflicted about KO getting the shot but I think we need this stability now.
your right, now that I think about it July or August would be better, especially for the recruits we are now involved with.
do you lol every time some one requests for his release or when recruits that would consider uconn a dream school in the past go to cincy? or nc state? or st. johns? or smu?
We aren't getting any recruits of significance for 2012. JC needs to make this "official" announcement before July as the 2013 recruiting push begins. He may say nothing, but, if he's on the recruiting trail in July, he'll be definately back. Let's face it, he recruited Daniels & Calhoun, last year, well before this announcement.
You do realize that people retire, don't you? What's this two year minimum thing? He could come back and say, it's my last year. He was going to have a last year at some point.
All that matters is what Calhoun is telling recruits and Warde Manuel. Jim Calhoun doesn't care if Don Amore and Jeff Jacobs are privy to his plans and he certainly doesn't care if the Boneyard is privy to his plans. As long as the message to recruits isn't "I'm not sure if I'm coming back this year" it's not really an issue. And I can't imagine that he is stupid enough to spread that message out on the recruiting trail. And to those who think that a Jim Calhoun announcement is the only thing keeping us from reeling in some great 2012 big men - 1) we are banned from the 2013 postseason; and 2) even if we weren't, there's nobody left anyways. We all pine for guys like Bradley Hayes now, but if he committed to us under normal circumstances we'd be scratching our heads - there's a reason his name hasn't come up until a couple of weeks ago. We pine for Chris Obepka as if he's going to solve all our problems - I'd be suprised if he scores more than 3-4 points per game next year at this level. 2013 is the recruiting year that really matters. If Jim Calhoun announces right now that he's coming back to coach next year's team, nothing really changes on that front.
The succession plan gives recruits on the fence a measure of stability. There are no guarantees in life even for a 42 year old coach, but if you look at it from a prospective recruit's view he at this point doesn't know who the coach is this year, doesn't know who would take over if Calhoun comes back for only 1, and has a banned program(for this year) that he has to commit to. All of the "who is going to take over UCONN" talk disappears which is negative all season long as our program's APR situation is bashed and rehashed. Don't see the downside here. just announcing he's coming back for one with Blaney the assistant is not good enough at this point.
I will always support and back Calhoun. But this act every offseason is becoming a little old. They said there would be a definate decision right after the Championship game....a month later and still nothing. This is beginning to get to be like the Brett Favre and GB Packers situation of a few years ago. While Favre (Calhoun) has earned the right to decide when and how he goes out, the indecision and drama at the end of every single season starts to hurt the Packers (UConn) program from planning and executing for future success. I will always back and support Calhoun. But I have a feeling that there are many people who are starting to have doubts about the situation just like it happened at the end of the Favre situation in GB. Hope we don't have a similar ending here!
This board is schizophrenic. the vast majority want no succession plan. They want a new coach. It's not Calhoun's decision to make regardless.
I never said I thought it would be better if he didn't make an announcement nor that I think it's funny that other people think he should announce sooner rather than later. Furthermore, do people realistically think that Calhoun hasn't told recruits his plans for the future? When someone like Jim Calhoun sits in your living room and says I'll be back for two more years or I'll only be coaching for one more season, I think you take his word that he gave to you personally over what he says or does not say in the media.
If SMU can bring in Brown at 71 to build (forget about re-build), why can't we just accept that Calhoun is running this ship until we hear otherwise?
we can. but smu brought in brown with a coach in waiting and clear path towards the future. for every recruit coach is telling he will be around in 2years, there are 20 coaches telling that same recruit he wont be. listen to what hayes said. there is little reason for any one to commit to uconn until that path is defined by the staff and administration.
the weird thing is that there doesn't seem to be any downside to making an announcement just to put the issue to bed, whereas there does seem to be some downside by not saying anything. they can say whatever they want, it doesn't really matter. they could say that calhoun will coach through his contract and they are working on an extension. even if it isn't true all they have to do later is say that he decided to retire, whether it's this year or next year or whenever no one will know the difference. all i can think of is that they (meaning calhoun and the AD) either don't think that calhoun's status is an issue and that an announcement doesn't matter, or they aren't seeing eye to eye about the future and there is no announcement to make yet.
It's funny because people type up these posts as if they have any weight to them, as if someone from UConn is reading and then calls up coach and says "Yeah, it's time." Just give it a frickin rest already. Have you learned nothing from the past few years? He's going to do it when he wants to, for better or worse.
Of course I believe that. If he's telling the people who matter (recruits and Uconn administrators) what his intentions are, then I really don't care whether or not he tells you and me.
