He is still contemplating on whether or not to have surgery which has not been scheduled, but the original plan was to have it done after exams. Borges latest article states, with quotes from Alterique, that he still has not fully committed to having surgery.

For those too lazy here is a snippet but there is more, EVEN IF YOU DON'T INTEND TO READ THE ARTICLE PLEASE CLICK THE LINK (if you want to have more coverage of UConn you have to support the journalist covering them by at least clicking on their articles even if you don't intend on reading the article):

Freshman point guard Alterique Gilbert is slated for surgery at some point over the next month, likely when semester exams end. Gilbert, however, hinted that he’s not 100 percent sure he’ll have surgery, and that it’s a decision he still has to reach with his parents.

Latest UConn-Syracuse men’s basketball bout pairs up two struggling teams

First and foremost I hope he has a very smooth and healthy recovery for his own health and well being.

Second, as a fan if he does not elect to have surgery and continues to recover and feels better it would be a huge boost for the team if he can play this year! With him back on the court this year it will allow us to cut down on turnovers and better handle the press, and it would certainly increase expectations for this years team.

Hope he does whatever is best for him... but it would really suck if he doesnt get the surgery, thinks he's ready for next season and then next season we deal with the same situation and he has to have a surgery. I'd much rather he have the surgery now if it is really needed. Thats between him and the Uconn staff and whoever the doctor is though.

Correct me if wrong but the first surgery was for separated shoulder. This surgery is for torn Labrum ?? Same shoulder but different surgery no?
The surgery came after he dislocated the shoulder. I believe he got the surgery to help prevent the shoulder from popping out again. His most recent injury was also a dislocation, he said himself it popped out and they popped it back in the locker room. Im guessing the torn labrum is a result of the dislocation? All this scares me. He apparently just finished rehabbing from preventative surgery to help keep the shoulder from popping out again and three games into the season it popped out again.

Hosptl for Special Surgery or NYU Joint in NYC, or Mass Gnl in Boston may be in order

Well, I'd weigh in on this but I don't know where to start. Lots of things to consider, and unless you're either the MD or the patient you and I can't really speculate. I will say that the decision to do revision surgery is never as straightforward as the decision to do the index surgery. That original procedure alters the anatomy, creates scarring, and may have left hardware that makes the revision much more complex. With a revision it also may be that he will require an open procedure, rather than arthroscopic.

Best to leave the decision to Alterique, his family, and his surgeon.

UConn Ortho has some pretty strong sports medicine specialists. He just needs a versatile shoulder specialist.

Dr Arciero at Uconn is a leading expert in shoulder dislocations. Much more respected then anyone at hss or joint disease or mass general when it comes this.

Shoulder / torn Labrum issues here - When I consulted with Dr's (Hartford area) some surgical options might make it worse and don't guarantee success. I was given 60/40 success rate - which I decided were not good enough odds.

The scary thing was that the lack of success could lead to way more dislocations and shoulder issues.
