I wonder what that universe of players looks like as I can't remotely recall any hoop players doing the high jump (men or women). Sprints yes, middle distance yes, even the "field" component of shot put or javelin but not the high jump.

Nope - we should continue to recruit good basketball players. If they happen to be high jumpers or 100 meter specialists as well, great. But we have for years seen teams recruit great athletes that fail to impress with their ability to actually put a round ball through a iron ring.

FWIW Back in the 50's the Philadelphia Warriors had a high jumper as their center. Wilt high-jumped in H.S. and maybe in college. I also think Bill Russel high-jumped. We don't see that now because kids start concentrating on one sport much earlier in life.

Yes.
And we should be recruiting hurdlers like Napheesa.
And we should be recruiting soccer players like Molly.
And we should be recruiting weight lifters like Crystal.
And we should be recruiting Karate kids like TLaw.
And we should be recruiting more curling kids like Kia.
As long as they know how to ball!

That's a fact I did not know. This becomes a pretty good subset of UConn corners the market on Woman High Jump/Basketball players!

I made an observation some time ago that some excellent athletes in other JHS and HS sports across this country have to be watching Gabby and saying "Perhaps me". It's inevitable.

Do the Canadian's actually have a SPORT with a curling iron?? How is judged ringlets, long curls, Shirley Temple,
???? Could be a very dangerous sport!! Was Kia in the CNCaa's in Curling??? Bet she was tops in body blocks!

I don't care what they did in High School--what are these guys eating for Breakfast now??

High jumping and basketball got very little in common...Gabby happens to be a special individual who worked very very hard on her basketball skills
Let me add---she works hard period. She is very intense, when she sits I think she going to cry every time ..I'm thrilled when I see her jumping and giggling with the team--F. U. N. --is what it's all about.

Maya was a pretty good HS high jumper but not a great one. As a sophomore she cleared 5-4 in their state meet. As a sophomore, Gabby went almost 6-2. Big difference.

Curling is played on ice with a broom. Kia is making a clean sweep of NCAA titles.

Lou played her freshman year of HS at Edison High. I thought she was also on the freshnan T&F team and did do high jump.
When she transferred to Mater Dei she wasn't doing the high jump anymore. Not sure if it was her choice or the schools

When recruiting high jumpers, you have to make sure they can play basketball and be physically and mentally tough to bang bodies. A lot of high jumpers are finesse types and track and field is very different from basketball.

Wilt did the triple jump in college at Kansas.

While attending the University of Kansas, Chamberlain triple jumped in excess of 50 feet and successfully won the Big 8 Conference high jumping competition three years in a row. He also ran a sub 11 second 100 yard dash and threw the shot put 56 feet.

The 11 sec in the 100 yd is not impressive, but given his prowess in the triple jump and the shot, I wonder if he ever entered a decathlon. The high-jump, triple (not a decathlon event), and shot numbers are off the charts; presumably he'd excel in the broad jump, discuss, and javelin. The 100 number is good in a decathlon field (NCAA in the late 50's); I'd expect he'd be fine in the hurdles and 440. That only leaves the mile and pole vault. I think he could pretty much use the pole to help himself over the bar at 8 feet (I think that was the minimum for scoring then/there), and wouldn't think he'd embarrass himself in the mile.

Okay, I'm a frustrated decathlete whose coach forgot to enter him in the CT state championships way back when. Sorry for the way-too-in-depth analysis. ;)

Maybe restrict to heptathletes. Even if they have no BB skills. put them in as elite defenders.
