Everyone is waiting to see if B12 will offer UConn a spot. But if UConn signs an agreement with B12 that makes it hard to leave if ACC or B10 comes calling -- is this a good thing? What should UConn do in this case?

Accept or die.

Btw - it's not like we'd be the only one signing rights away for years, the whole conference signs a grant of rights for the same length of time.

There's nothing else to worry about. Get on the lifeboat. Worry about embarking on another cruise once you are assured safety.

I think the risk of UT and OU leaving the B12 has been completely overblown. UT doesn't want to play second fiddle to anybody in another conference, so going independent would be the only plausible way they leave. OU would probably have to drag OSU along with them if they leave, which may or may not be well received by other conferences. Nobody is drooling over the prospect of locking down the greater Stillwater media market.

Despite the inherent dysfunctionality that is the B12, these two schools could stay in it for a very long time.

If UConn gets into the B12, I would predict that half of the people on this site, would be expecting UConn to get into the B10 as the next step, especially if the AAU sends an invite letter. But a GOR can keep UConn in a conference long-term that is poorly suited for a college in New England.

Wow...being in a conference poorly suited to a college in New England we'd have no experience with that at all.
Meanwhile we can stay in a league where our best rival is maybe Temple for basketball and a winless UCF for football, or we could play basketball against Kansas, OSU, OU, ISU and UT and football against Texas, OU, OSU and TCU. Oh and probably Cinci as well, our closest current rival in the American.

It's like saying, you can have a huge mansion in Mission Hills, KS (KC) or you can have a shack in Appalachia, but if you take the mansion, you can never buy ocean front property on the Atlantic. Not really a tough call.

Your prediction is wrong. Please stop.

Should we be wary? Yes.

Should we sign the deal as soon as its put in front of us? Also yes.

Presumably an "agreement that keeps them in" the B12 for decades is a GOR extension that keeps Texas and OU. So no, they shouldn't be wary.

To go to the B1G you need a partner, and with the ACC locked up through 2036, the partner would come from the B12. So UConn signing the B12 GoR in no way prevents a move to the B1G at the expiration of the B12 GoR.

The ACC is a little different because Notre Dame could theoretically be the partner, but if Notre Dame won't budge on their independence now, there's no reason to expect them to budge later. So again, ACC expansion might require a partner from the B12.

Here are some relevant questions. Who was the partner with Nebraska for the B10? Could Vanderbilt or another school leave the SEC and go to the B10? Could Navy go football only to the ACC? These are just some of the questions this site needs to consider. More fundamentally, what if the BIG or the ACC decide to expand in five years. Assume UConn is in the B12 and bound by a GOR. Could UConn lose out to other schools not under a GOR?

What schools would it lose out to? Who would be available in a world where the B12 and ACC are locked up until 2036?

Ok fine we miss out and remain P5 in that scenario. Can we get in to the B12 first before we wring our hands over this?

B10: Notre Dame; Vanderbilt or any other SEC school; an athletically improved Tulane, an athletically improved Buffalo [both are AAU members].

ACC: Temple, Navy (football only), an athletically improved Tulane.

These are just some examples.

The B10 and ACC may want to expand solely for financial reasons, and that may come well before the B12 GOR expires. That is likely UConn's best scenario for getting into one of these conferences, unless it gets a top 10 ranking for football and makes the AAU.
