. . . eternal! All the Home Towne Team has to do is replicate the 1914 Boston Braves, who were also in last place on July 4 in the National League.

At one point in July, their record was a dismal 26W, 40L. Then they went on a tear with a three-pitcher starting rotation: Rudolph, James, and Tyler. They finished the season on a 70W-19L run that won the NL pennant (Giants in 2nd place, 10.5 games behind). They capped this remarkable season by sweeping the heavily favored A's in four games.

Red Sox fans, take note!

Two game winning streak and only six games back. Bucholtz, Rodriguez and Uehara looking good. One or two outstanding pitching prospects about to be brought up. It could happen.

How many of those games were you able to attend?

Something one could say about any of the 30 major league teams. The key is whether that franchise has the players to actually accomplice that feat.

After last night's game you have to wonder; can a team go anywhere with that defense?

Last night the problem with the pitching and hitting was not a lack of consistency - it was an absence of quality. OTOH, the defense was generous - the Yankees don't need the gift of five outs in any single inning.

Yes, "consistent" was a poor choice of words. Actually, they have been "consistent"; consistently mediocre.

Meanwhile the Yanks are sweeping the O's this week (9-3, bottom of 8th now in game 3), pounding them down into 3rd place...

I have figured out why the Red Sox are in last place. All the other teams are better.

Simple case of incredibly bad decisions by management, not worthy of recitation or analysis here. Result: Except for two young catchers, one inconsistent starting pitcher, one infielder, one outfielder and one utility player, the roster is cluttered with aging, overpaid, or under-performing players. They stink.:(

In the spirit of "when it rains it pours" and "rubbing salt into wounds", Alex Rodriguez hit three mammoth home runs tonight as the Yankees came back from a 5-0 deficit to beat the Twins 8-5.
