8 - If you are doing a wordplay, I'll go along with Freemont. The poster who suggested Missouri Compromise has the wrong one, I think - that was 1820, California was in the 1850 Compromise. OTH, Freemont wasn't really a noted politician, more of an adventurer and military operator.
