The timing is interesting. I'm sure the Governor is really saying please don't block us this time around. We need a big donor to make a sizable donation to BC.
Agreed. If we can keep Rutgers and add BC as a yearly game, that's at least two games every year we can look forward to regardless of record and ranking (I think the term is called a rival, but college football has seemed to ban it).
The only time I can recall that politicians had any influence on a conference decisions was when VA was forced to agree to take VT into the ACC in the last round of ACC expansion. Malloy has absolutely no influence over the ACC, Big 12, Big10 but he can issue press releases about how 'concerned' he is. Like with most politicians, that concern and $5 will get you a latte at Starbucks.
I tried to look at this whole thing rationally (which is always difficult for me!) and not let my complete hatred of BC get in the way. Finally, after a lot of thought about the subject, I actually think that we have more to lose than to gain by opening the door to playing BC now. In 2003, if you asked me if we should play, I would have said "yes." The reason would have been that if we lose, the perception in the northeast would be that BC was better than us, but at the time, it was ALREADY thought that BC was better than us. We lost big time recruits from our own state to BC and we had difficulty getting any from the rest of New England. Fast-forward to 2012. Our conference situation is worse than theirs, but I think that the public perception about which team is better has changed a great deal. We are seen as at least an equal if not slightly superior to BC by many in our state and in New England now. We are starting to win recruiting battles against them, not only in our state, but in their's as well. Their recent times in the ACC have been pretty bad after Ryan left for the NFL. If we played them and won, it would be a good boost. But we are headed in that direction anyways. And if we lost, we would restore the 2003 vision of UConn, that we are the unworthy smaller kid on the block. So again, I think we help them more than help us by opening the door. Having said that......bring it, you Eagle bi! #es!!!
There is no downside to playing Boston College. They suck nuts in almost everything not played on ice - I doubt they're interested in proving that on a regular basis against UConn, however.
I don't see it happening. Once UConn is in the Yankee Conference, it will be selling its non-conference schedule to SEC teams. BCU can't afford us.
That concern might also help get him reelected. He's a politician, and releasing these kinds of statements garners public support.
