Maine Transfer Issac Vann visiting UConn on 4/18

The 2018/19 team is shaping up to be special if Adams stays all 4 years and brings Larrier along for the ride. The Adams (Sr.), Gilbert (Jr.) and Larrier (Sr.) nucleus would be a Final4 caliber nucleus. You just never know who may leave though a la Hamilton to break up the nucleus. Without one-and-dones everything becomes cyclical and you kinda just have to hit it right like UConn did between Kemba and Bazz. This kid could be a key piece to that Final4 puzzle.

I am looking way into the future and of course recruiting is fluid. The transfer scene is fluid also so you never know who could be picked up as a prize to help us get to the Promised Land before that. I like this pick up. Its fine.

This does sometimes happen. I think something similar just happened with a kid transferring to Cuse or Louisville, my apologies for not recalling which it was. Vann may be a bit too high quality of a player for something like that even if he's only generating A10 interest.

I'm not sure why we say "only A10" interest. There's a couple guys on St Joes who could play for us now and a lot, more than likely 2 or 3. There aren't as many players out there in the market for transfers as they're full, and he's a regional kid for now. To have a St Joes interested I believe is a good thing.

Not everybody on the team needs to be a future NBA player. Sometimes you just need guys who can do a job.

It's like the concept of depth is lost in this guy. No one is saying he's gonna average 16 and 6 for us, but the idea this kid could play a specific role, or at least be a solid third string winger is not ridiculous.

Actually, it's not a stretch to think a kid that could get 16 and 6 as a freshman at Maine could potentially do the same as a senior at UConn.

I don't want to use a scholarship on a regular transfer who is unproven right now. We need depth for NEXT year, not a couple years down the road.

We've only got 3 guards on the roster at the moment; one who may already have a foot out the door while the other 2 are underclassmen. Our priority right now should be a PG/CG that can play next year, not a 2/3 shooting specialist from a low-major who won't be eligible until 2017.

I think it's fair to say that having Iona and St Joes' interest versus Syracuse, Zona, ect. puts more pressure on scouting. They have to really believe almost everyone else is missing something. St Joes is a wonderfully coached team, but they always have a lot less talent to work with than UConn does.

With that being said, I haven't seen any of this kid besides the first game of his career. Aside from a rough game against a good Stony Brook team, he went on a tear for the last 5 games of his season. It would be nice to see a local kid play his way to UConn and succeed though.

St Joes is a wonderfully coached team, but they always have a lot less talent to work with than UConn does.

Well, to be fair, UConn is still dealing with some of the scholarship limitation fallout from the APR era. And then add in the Hamilton early exit and possibly Brimah and Purvis and a lot of other D1 teams are probably not in a similar situation. Plus the kid is from CT and played against UConn this season, so our coaching staff probably has a better idea of his talent than the vast majority of other schools.

I love this kid. I saw him in person twice and observed that he was playing at a different level than anyone on the court.

Ah yes, one guy who transferred from a non-D1 school and was successful means all of them will be. My point is I'm quite skeptical of honing in on a transfer from a program like Maine. The program where a transfer comes from is absolutely relevant, especially when that program is one of the worst in the country. It's not the final determining factor of course, but to eschew it is laughable. If the coaching staff has seen enough of this kid that they think he's a diamond in the rough, then great - I hope he works out. That doesn't mean there isn't reason to be skeptical that we're looking to fill our roster with a Maine transfer who put up decent numbers in a horrendous league, injury or not.

Actually, there were two NESCAC transfers helping higher end D-1 schools this year alone. A kid named Matt Hart scored over 1000 points his first two years at Hamilton, transferred to and walked on at George WAshington, and was the 8th man in the rotation as they won the NIT (and earned a schollie). I'd put Hart at 6'2" at most and without D-1 athleticism. But he helped a team beat UVA and win the NIT.

The point is if you watch a player play and want to disagree with the coaches' evaluations, o.k. I guess. But if you think your view of his resume on paper is worth anything compared to our staff having seen him or film and wanting to get him to campus, I don't know what to tell you.

Take a look at where Lisbon, NY is ... and think where you could go from Lisbon High School in 1977? Near where the GREAT Rutgers FB Brian Leonard was from. Carlisle needed someone to take a chance; and HE was damn good at Virginia ... and decent in the NBA.

Somewhere out there, you will see hoop or football players coming from strange outposts. It happens. Vann looks like a good fit to me.
