Explosive, fast, some strength. Exactly what we need at RB position. Reminds me a little bit of Jordan Canzeri from a few years back...

No offense meant (as he's Terry Caulley size), but when is UConn going to get an RB commit from a player in the 6' 2" 225 lb. range?

this staff is after apb's and smaller backs it seems. i think edwards from ny is the only big back we offered of that size range but i think he may end up being a lb in college fwiw

walsh is that size btw but we are going to make him a fb, possibly a lb.

This is a nice pick-up, Josh Marriner is having a very good senior year down in Virginia. With Edwards off the board and with a mutual cooling with Laray Smith, Marriner was probably the best tail-back left on our board, outside of Dez Wortham...…
Welcome aboard Josh….

If Navy and Air Force are serious about the kid's academic eligibility, and they're serious about his ability to play football as a ball carrier? That's a player that I'm comfortable, has some pretty good potential to be able to carry the pig.

Welcome to the Husky family Josh.

he's a little bigger than Caulley bro... He's coming in at 5'9 188lbs (current size).. Caulley came in a tad shorter, but a little heavier than our current starter ( around 5'7 170/175lbs )

I don't care how tall a RB is. There is no need for a 6'2 RB as there is no reason for them to be standing tall and looking over the OL. UConn needs a RB with some bulk and 5'9 188 lbs is a really nice size for a senior in high school. As HS seniors Todman was 5'10 185 and Donald Brown was 5'11 190. Ray Rice who is certainly not looked upon as a small back who can't run inside was the exact same 5'9" 188 as a senior.

The trend for great RBs lately has been 5'8"-5'9". MJD is 5'7", Ray Rice5'8", Trent Richardson 5'9". I personally think a lot of guys like McCoy that are listed at 5'11" might actually be in the 5'9-10 range. A lot of the bigger backs in the NFL, the few that are over 6' like AP and Arian Foster, are known for their history of injuries. A little guy that doesn't take as many direct hits has a better chance of survival and they can come flying out of the OLine unseen.

Yes, height is not correlated with success for RBs, or is anti-correlated. Reduced visibility, so the defense loses track of small backs for a moment, makes a big difference in enabling a back to get through holes before they close. As I wrote on a physics thread a while back, size only gives you a few extra inches in a collision. The real payoff is in evasion. Also, it's so important to have a multi-dimensional back who can catch the ball, be an outlet in the passing game, even run deep routes. Marriner is a great get for us, he is a quality player and the type of player we need to build a dynamic offense.

Marriners's best time of 6.43 seconds in the 55 meter dash is faster than Leray Smith's best time of 6.49 seconds. Smith has great 200 meter times, but last time I checked most football fields are less than 200 meters. 100 meters are also close with Smith having a best of 10.73 and Marriner running a 10.79. Good size and great speed. Nice pick up.

I am like most here who think that McCombs at 165 lbs is not the answer at RB. At that size you need to have Noel Devine type speed. Caulley was that back before the injury. McCombs will never be that back. McCombs was not a Pasqualoni recruit and the backs he brought in are Delorenzo at 213 lbs and Joe Williams at 200 lbs. These guys can take a hit and get yards with their size and strength. I don't think you can paint a broad brush and say that UConn is small at RB. Hopefully we see more of the bigger backs and less McCombs.

Marriner is performing on the field too. Through six games he has 951 yards on 98 carries, 9.7 yards per carry, 158.5 yards per game, 11 TDs.

He can break tackles and also is hard to bring down, watch him move the piles for extra yardage at 2:30 and 3:20:

Love the balance and low center of gravity.
