Given the time limitations, having extra resources in the form of 3 more Genos will help. And it's a great experience for the assistants.

Should CD, Marissa and Shea be more concerned with 2013 and 2014 recruiting then helping the National Team? If it only for a couple of days or a week, then its not a problem, any longer then that recruiting or even preparation for the upcoming season could be impacted.

Oh, I don't know, Wbb. While on the recruiting trail, it can't hurt to be able to truthfully recount working with all the talented individuals on the National Team (and, so many of them UConn alumni). Basically, if you're a stellar high school talent, and the entire coaching staff of the school recruiting you is talented enought to work at the highest levels in the world.... how you gonna beat that for your own personal development?

I'm not sure whether the coaches are allowed to supervise current players' preparation for the season at this time of year. I thought they weren't allowed to do that until October. I'm sure someone knows the rules better than I do and will correct that if I'm totally (or even slightly) off base.

As for recruiting, what I've read from other sources indicates that it will be a while til any of our 2013 recruits are ready to make a decision. And when they do, wouldn't you like for our coaches to be able to talk to them about the experience of working with the USA Olympic team? That will be a unique selling point.

They can have no basketball related contact with the current team during the summer. And is it even a recruiting period? There are very limited time periods where they can attend AAU games. And to go along with that there are no contact periods during the summer, and even if it was a contact period CD, Shea, and Marisa can make phone calls from anywhere. I don't really see any downside, and all three have been spending time helping to coach the USA team for the last three years including attending just about every training camp.

I believe NCAA allows a limited number of hours for individual coaching and/or meetings, but not any team coaching.

Not during the summer. What you are referring to is only available in the Fall and the Spring right before and after the basketball season. Only strength and conditioning supervision is allowed during the summer.

So, what I think this means is, all three of these women are giving up significant chunks of their scarce and precious vacation time to help out - without any formal recognition, at least in terms of title or the public eye.

Gracias, ladies, gracias! ( I hope I spelled that right).

Haven't you heard? No UConn player or coach can leave Storrs this summer for any period of time without it resulting in potential doom. I wonder if Baylor fans are worried about their recruiting with Kim and BG spending all that time in Hollywood for the ESPYS.

Well said, Pinotbear, and I'll bet that they are doing it on their own dime, too! It's just a shame that CD can't sit on the bench to hold back that crazy little Italian guy when a Euro-ref tries to stick it to the USA!

    So this is the scenario:

Geno: "Chris, wanna spend 3 weeks at the beach this summer, or wanna come to London with me and the Olympic team?"

    Chris: "Beach, what beach?"

Geno is following the model used by Coach K in 2008. Coach K's assistants at Duke (Wojo, Chris Collins) were not part of the USA staff but helped Coach K run training camps, practices, scout, etc. I noticed that both Wojo and Collins sitting behind the USA bench last night much like CD did. It makes a lot of sense as the assistants know best what the coaches (Geno and Coach K) are trying to get done.
