Will this get wider support? Is this an anti-religious freedom action by Iowa State students? What will it mean, if anything, for UConn in realignment?

Here are some details: The Iowa State University student government has come out against BYU's Big 12 candidacy, according to The Ames Tribune.

The university's student senate passed a resolution Wednesday stating it, "believes that BYU's discriminatory policies and practices are inconsistent with the values of the Big 12 Conference," and it "does not support BYU's membership bid to the Big 12 conference at this time."

"Student Government's goal is to create a safe and all-inclusive campus where students feel supported to learn, grow and succeed. The Senate finds that Brigham Young University's Honor Code does not communicate nor reflect the values that The Big XII Conference represents. Therefore, the Senate of Student Government does not support BYU's membership bid to the Big XII at this time."

Iowa State student body president Cole Staudt said in a statement that "BYU's policies against the LGBT community are contrary to the community we desire in the United States" but stopped short of fully supporting the senate resolution.

Iowa St is the 10th most important member in a 10-team conference. Their opinion, let along their students' opinion, matters to no one.

Add Kansas State student group to the list. Likely looking at most/all B12 member student groups posting similar messages. With yesterday's NCAA/North Carolina news, BYU's Honor Code needs to be addressed ASAP or it will likely keep them out.

Not to the Big 12 coaches or athletic departments, but this issue is right where university presidents live. There will be blow back if they ignore it. I'd be amazed if at least three didn't see it as a deal breaker, especially given the issues with Baylor.

Agree but how many votes does a team need to gain entry, in a ten team conference one vote does hold some sway.

If TX, OK, and 6 other schools want something to happen I cant believe that Iowa St is going to bend to the will of a student group and stop it. If the B12 falls apart, the school most likely to be exiled to the G5 is Iowa St.

BYU's Honor Code and the strict belief system of the LDS Church is always going to be an impediment to entry into a P5 conference.
