Donyell to CCSU

He's not turning CCSU around, they just on a different level. CCSU can't recruit like most programs. No team in the Northeast Conf will ever dominate, they take turns. I think it's a good move for Donyell. He can focus on recruiting and coaching. I think he'll be successful and I think he'll move on, but in the short term is a very positive move for CCSU, a win win.
I guess it depends on what you mean by turning the program around but they're literally the worst D1 program in America so at this point if they don't finish dead last in RPI anymore some may consider that a turn around?

Scott Burrell is the head coach at Southern. Now all we need is a former player coaching at Eastern and Western, and we have the state system covered.

I think CCSU is now set up to move on from the NEC. They're the only public school in that conference. In the next 2 years their main sports (football, wbb) along with expectations of better MBB play will probably help them.
Where would they go? I'd doubt the CAA would want them and the America East doesn't sponsor football.

Very happy for Donyell Marshall on this one. Central has had some pretty good teams over the years so he's not exactly walking into a low-major.

I've always felt that Craig Austrie and Donnell Beverly were two other guys who could really do well as coaches.

Huge get for the CCSU admin. It's a commuter school in a dead little pocket of town. Never been a well attended campus for any sport. I know some folks over there and they're good people and this is a big name for them with a good amount of momentum behind him coming in. Good for them.

Craig has been running ball camps I'm sure it's a goal for him.

I'm a CCSU alum living in NB and I used to go to as many games as I could but the program in it's current state is the worst in D1.

9 years since Central's last NCAA tournament appearance. No easy challenge, but a few good recruits can make a huge difference on their level. Good luck to Donyell!

Rome wasn't built in a day... and, even though their MBB squad is now starting from the bottom, they can come back quicker than most. You have a guy in Donyell in place now that's an attractive piece to recruits... and their Football and WBB programs will only improve... I follow them a little bit.. they're building piece by piece.. I give them about 5 years... then they'll be attractive a conference like the CAA.. They're a D1 program in Football (FCS), MBB(mid major), & WBB (mid major)... As a public school, with coaches in place that talented kids want to play for, I expect them to make a jump to that next level (long overdue)...

I want a 7'5" guy who I know can turn AB into a 20/15 machine immediately.

Congrats, Donyell! My only piece of advice is that you discourage your players from returning books at the end of the semester that are still in their original packaging!

I sincerely wish Donyell great success at his head coaching opportunity. Let us never forget what a big deal it was for Donyell to come to UCONN in the first place, as highly ranked as he was. He has been nothing but true blue and white in his support and frankly I'm a bit saddened that he is not on our staff, but should he do a great job and should KO leave someday, who knows? We know that Donyell is doing this because of his passion and commitment and not because he needs the dough. Best of luck!

Haven't seen Donyell in a long time. Looks a lot different from that tall kid who donned #42.

I want to see him posting in the pizza thread.

Some very nice posts. As a CCSU fan, I appreciate the support of Husky Nation. I just wanted to respond to give you guys a different perspective--a Central Connecticut perspective....things that we want UConn fans to know about life on the other side...
For starters, I'm old enough to remember when UConn wasn't good--when the Huskies were playing in the old Field House and lurking in the basement of the Big East. Wasn't that long ago actually. I'm bringing this up, not to create a riot in The Boneyard, but simply to remind some of you that programs can turn things around relatively quickly. We look to UConn as a perfect blueprint for success. That's what we want to see in New Britain. Are we talking National Championships? Well, no. We're talking about becoming a solid D-1 program who can compete. However, in order to do that, we need the State to be serious about supporting us as a D-1 program. The new Rec Center and remodel of Detrick Gym is a good start. I'd love to see Husky fans come and check things out when it's completed in 2017--just like many of us support you guys.
Secondly, it's tough for us to ask for your respect when the past few years have been God-awful. However, there was time--9-16 years ago--when we were the second best team in CT...and Central was ready to make that jump to a more respectable level. We remember almost knocking off Iowa St in the first round of the tourney, going into Providence and beating a Big East school, and burying UMass by 30. Those were the good days! Unfortunately, the bottom fell out and it was like a dagger through the heart of Blue Devil Nation.
Thirdly, yes there is in fact a "Blue Devil Nation." We are passionate about our university and loyal to our athletic teams. They always talk about being a "Central Guy." It really is true. Being a Central Guy is like being in the mafia--like it or not, there's no getting out!
Also, there's been some talk here about where CCSU would go as far as conference affiliation. The America East makes sense for so many reasons. The problem is football. Football would have to stay in the NEC. OR...Central would need to bite the bullet and try (beg?) to get into the CAA. Yeah, I know...tough jump at this point.
Finally, the new coach for MBB... The consensus of Blue Devil Nation was that we did not want Donyell. (Was that a gasp I just heard?! :) ) Our choice was Pat Sellers--a Central Guy. However, now that the decision has been made, we will support Donyell 100%. He will immediately be accepted as part of the family. As Central fans, all we ask of Husky Nation is to support us. No condescending comments. Come to a few games. Check out low-major D-1 basketball. You might actually like the experience...especially with your old friend leading the charge.

Except for two missed free throws some curmudgeons still harp on, you won't find a single person here with anything bad to say about 'Yell. You won't find a single person who isn't pulling for him. I hope Taliek gets on that staff, because I have a hunch he'll play really, really well in terms of getting some good inner city kids. Best of luck.

We also hope the program turns very quick, because that game has killed our RPI recently. And there's no chance of Ollie dropping that game with Donyell at the helm.
