Barbara Stevens did coach D1 for 3 years - not sure exactly how the NCAA tracks records, but it seems to be any D1 coaching makes their record a 'D1' record - UMass 83-86

I am repeating my post regarding why Geno may move up the ranks of winning coaches on Wikipedia sooner than later.

I have posted a few times about this wikipedia page List of college women's basketball coaches with 600 wins
The page is maintained mostly by Oakraven81 who updates the list about once a week.
He/She has now been joined by 67.180.248.170 - a San Francisco IP address.
Mr/Ms IP address edits the list whenever Geno wins a game.
He/She correctly enters Geno's number and does not touch rest of the list.
In this way he is expediting Geno's march to a higher ranking on Wikipedia.
You can verify this by checking the History tab.
It may not matter given Rutgers' performance this season. But you have been warned.

I get the P5 and RU/AZ opponent coaches' win/loss record before each season, using the NCAA web-site. So far as I can tell, they do not differentiate divisions at all. They do not include Junior College by whatever name (Andy Lander's gripe) and they don't include NAIA so far as I could tell, nor do they combine men and women (for example, Mike Carey has coached both).

I do believe you can get separate lists of most wins by division in the NCAA record-book.

Correction to the note on Tara VanDerVeer:
Tara skipped the 1995-96 season to coach the olympic team (while simultaneously doing a job on Rebecca Lobo).
She sacrificed the 29-3 record the Cardinals got that season. Her 1993-94 and 1994-95 records are included in the statistics.
The 1995-96 W/L records go to co-head coaches Marianne Stanley and Amy Tucker. Both are credited with the W/L record on the NCAA webpage.

Clarification about Sylvia Hatchell:

NCAA rules are
If the head coach is not present at a contest due to illness or other unexpected circumstances, or otherwise is unable to complete the sport season, it is the responsibility of the institution to determine, preferably prior to the contest, whether the win, loss or tie for that contest shall be credited to the head coach or to an interim or assistant coach.
At Stanford, the school and Tara VanDerveer together must have made the decision to credit Amy Tucker and Marianne Stanley with the wins during the 1995-96 season. At North Carolina, the school decided to credit Hatchell with the wins. This is a very common decision and certainly not tainted by any stretch of imagination.
At LSU, Sue Gunter missed the major part of the 2003-04 season due to illness. Pokey Chatman coached the team. But the school credits the season to Gunter. there is nothing tainted about it.

Hatchell was suspended for 2 games in 2016. One suspension came from the university and per NCAA rules, she was credited with the W/L record for that game. The other suspension came from NCAA. She received credit for that game as well.
If a head coach is suspended for a game or more by the school or conference, he or she is still eligible to receive the wins or losses in his or her absence, but some institutions have chosen to give the record to the interim coach. If a head coach is suspended by the Committee on Infractions, he or she will not receive credit for the wins or losses; those decisions will go toward the interim coach’s record. Other unique circumstances will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis
BY had detailed discussion about this and I do not remember the explanation.

I wonder how many more wins that Geno would have had he become a head coach at age 22 and feasted on a steady diet of cupcakes for a decade or so.

Kurt Vonnegut said it:
"Of all sad words of mice and men, the saddest are 'It might have been.'"
Kurt so closely copied this from John Greenleaf Whittier that in a college course he would have been flunked for plagiarism. Of course, as Sally Kellerman's character points out in "Back to School," Kurt also knew nothing about Vonnegut.

3 years out of 40 years in D-1 doesn't compare to Geno 1200 games coached all in D-1. or any other coaches spending the major part of their life in D-1. Furthermore I couldn't find her winning a game vs AP TOP 25

"Tainted" I was being charitable. No righteous person claims someone else accomplishment which is worst than plagiarized specially in the education arena. The administration blessing this deal is the same one being complaisant allowing the bogus course for athletes while tutors did the work and Sylvia in the middle of it. Compare that to Tara doing the admirable righteous move to let an interim coach getting credit for his work . A teaching moment in the "Education World"

Even 1100 games, all at one school, is impressive.

Earliest games these could happen:
  • Tara hits 1000 -- 1/29 @ Washington (My guess: 2/19 v Cal)
  • Hatchell hits 1000 -- 2/19 @ Louisville (My guess: not this year)
  • Geno ties CVS -- 1/24 @ E Carolina (My guess: 2/5 v Tulsa)

BY (myself included) have (collective noun plural verb is probably correct) always appreciated Tara's altruism during the 1995-96 season. Only if we could get her to acknowledge doing a job on Rebecca Lobo simultaneously.
I too do not like the practice of getting credit for a win that one did not coach. If yelling would fix it, I would very gladly do it as well.

I wonder if you knew that CD coached a few games and Geno has been credited with the victories. Why don't you let charity begin at home.

If that Bay area IP-address keeps on updating Geno's tally, on Wikipedia Geno may blow by CVS earlier.
I have a hunch that IP-address is a BY member and UConn fan.

Yes I knew, an occasional game here and there is an acceptable practice because the coach involved had done the work in practice and set the line up and the plays. Versus a record of a complete season when the coach in dispute has not attend any practices and evaluate which player was best at which position given specific situations. Apples vs oranges. Get over it!

The only names on this list that retain my interest are Pat, Tara, and Geno. Others are (or destined to become) irrelevant. except to their schools and wcbb historians.

It is the entire season that galls. Or a major part, as in Sue Gunter's case. Yes, I get that these were health related, but I see that Kay Yow's Associate Head Coach got credit during one of her medical leaves.

Individual games (except for suspensions) I have no problem with. Vivian has missed a couple of games at Rutgers (her Mother's illness / death last year, her son's injury early in her RU career) and received credit for the results. However, her 1 game suspension some years back, per NCAA rules, was credited to Carlene Mitchell.

I expect Geno to become #1 in March of 2020. He will need something like 32 wins that year, give or take. That should be very doable with Crystal Dangerfield, Walker, Collier, Coombs, AEH and Gordon.

Tara is the only one who could conceivably keep up. But with the resurgent PAC 12 I don't see her averaging 30 wins a year.

I wonder how many more wins. That Pat would have had. Had she not gotten health problems.

She was 60 when she stepped down in 2012. If she coached another 5 years she would have no doubt added 120-150 wins to her resume - easily eclipsing the 1200-win plateau.

Barbara Stevens did coach D1 for 3 years - not sure exactly how the NCAA tracks records, but it seems to be any D1 coaching makes their record a 'D1' record - UMass 83-86

According to the NCAA Record Book, a coach that moves to another NCAA division level program must remain for 5 consecutive seasons, at which point all their cumulative records move with them to their current Division. For example, Joe Foley, the coach of AR-Little Rock, coached for 20 years at a Div II program before coming to Div I UALR in the mid-2000's. A significant portion of his current 728 wins occurred at the Div II level, but he is accorded all wins in his head coaching career as a Div I coach since he has been at Div I for over 9 years. Barbara Stevens remains officially listed as a Div II coach - she tops the all-time list for Division II, but she falls to 5-6th all-time for all division levels.
