Actually, that's the whole entire point. This is UConn, if you think the countries top 5 programs are regularly pursuing JUCO players then you are dead wrong. How many JUCO kids have Self, K, and Cal gone in to see lately? I don't want another Sam Cassell Jr. on this squad, things usually happen for a reason, ask yourself why this kid is playing at a junior college vs at a real university or prep school.

You get players wherever you can. Everybody does. With little to no effort:

Cal:

K:

Self:

And that doesn't include all the guys they tried to get over the years.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but does anybody think we'd have been better this year with Kris Dunn, Wayne Selden, Bonzi Colson, and Diamond Stone?
Yeah probably

But did you really expect Mike Hayes to come in and be a 30mpg per game guy? He was a big body backup who was ok for 7-8 minutes a game. You need those guys too. If CJ Jackson can play 10mpg and be a 3 point sniper then he's worth a scholarship.

I'd actually argue that most of our jucos have worked out. Off the top of my head...

1) Selvie - was a very productive player; perplexing at times, but a consistent 10 and 6 guy for two years.
2) Q Hardnett - was a solid off the bench as a 5-6ppg guy
3) Aforementioned Hayes. Big body and fouls.
4) Ryan Thompson - had a few moments here and there
5) Willie McCloud - from my early days as a little UConn fan. Dude could sky
6) Charles Okwandu - Heard he loves UConn...

On the not so good side...

1) Cup Cormier almost unseated KO as the starting PG during the 92-93 season. Cup was great in leading us to a victory against a pretty good NC State team but then became so inconsistent. I remember reading stuff about how incredibly dominant he was in practice. Didn't translate to games obviously.
2) Beau Archibald had talent but was injured from the start. Liked his phone a little too much too.
3) Sam II. He was one of our leading scorers during the preseason games last year and didn't he even start a few games at the start of last year? He has talent but it might be too late to realize it.

Any other jucos I forgot about?

With all due respect Sir, you can not list Johnny Selvie amongst the mere Juco
Players that were lucky to attend Uconn. Johnny Selvie has a cult following that makes Him more than just a lowly Juco player that luckily played for Uconn. Johnny was a Flintstone sir and the only reason that he went to a Juco is because he refused to play for the "diet" Jim Calhoun ( Tom Izzo). He wanted to play for the real Jim Calhoun. Also, any recent camera shot of Johnny Selvie at a Uconn game would instantly create threads that would rival the old Drummond thread or the Pizza thread. He is greatness. Do you not remember the battle cry " It's Johnny Time "!!!! You are forgiven.

Two words: Covington Cormier
Cup was great the beginning of that season and was eating away at KOs (then a sophomore) minutes. Cup was a great athlete and quick as hell. He just didn't know how to be a point guard.
Cup was like a Tasmanian Devil wildly spinning around the court. Fast and athletic but totally out of control at all times. Nice guy though.
I was so wrong about Cuppy. I loved his flash and rooted like hell for him, and for the first half of that season I was convinced that he would eventually replace KO (JC loved pulling that crap with KO btw). I was wrong.

So I moved on to food threads after that.

Didn't he play okay in the HOF game at the Springfield CC vs Glen Robinson and the Boilermakers but soon thereafter the roof caved in on his game? I was at the game but somehow I don't remember too much of it.

Does anyone know if we've offered Jackson? 247 says we've offered Vital and I assume we can't take both. Not really sure who would be a better fit; Vital seems to be a better ball handler but Jackson probably a better shooter.

That sounds right. I remember exactly where I was when I realized that he was over his head. It was a Gampel game and I was in my student season ticket seat in the last row directly behind the basket, and I watched him approach the hoop in traffic and totally out of control time and time again, with dipsy-doodle moves I was convinced were going to work but never did.

There's not a UCONN fan in existence (from that era) who doesn't chuckle at a Johnny joke, Boneyard or no. Guy is indelibly burned into the collective UCONN fan unconscious.

On a typical official visit the recruit arrives Thursday night and leaves Sunday. As of right now (Noon on Saturday), CJ is in Los Angeles. I'm assuming the visit was canceled/rescheduled or the initial report was bogus.

Forgot to add, I know he's in LA b/c of geo tags on his snapchat.

CGarr's relatively young iirc. It's all the kids do these days. Takes no effort, especially if you are on it all day.

It's more than a little disappointing that Johnny Selvie hasn't been invited back and got his place into the Huskies of honor. My guess is he wants to come back for games but is feeling spurned by not getting the recognition he deserves. The guy was arguably our best power forward ever, treat him with the respect he earned.

Cassell's JUCO freshman year:

2P FG 95-170 (55.9%), 6.3 points from 2Ps/game
3P 71-213 (33.3%), 7.1 points from 3P/game
FT 157-195 (80.5%), 5.2 points from FT/game

Jackson's JUCO freshman year:

2P FG 70-149 (47%), 4.4 points from 2Ps/game
3P 100-222 (45.5%), 9.4 points from 3Ps/game
FT 102-139 (73.4%), 3.2 points from FTs/game

What does this data show me? That in JUCO, Cassell didn't have a great outside jumper, but he took advantage of the sub-standard opposing defensive play and designed his offense by attacking the rim, especially since 11.5 ppg were generated from either 2 pt attempts or free throws. Now that Cassell is playing D1 basketball, against tougher opponents, he's not able to generate that same interior offense, thus forcing him to settle for more of an outside game, which he isn't that great in anyway.

The breakdown of Jackson's numbers make it look like he's more of an outside shooter. He doesn't generate a lot of free throw attempts (4.3/game compared to 6.5/game of Cassell), so I guess that his offensive game does not penetrate the interior often. He sticks to what he's good at, shooting threes, and the good news about 3 point shooters is that 3 point shooting ability translates better across different levels of play than lets say a guy like Cassell who was relying on attacking the rim in JUCO games.

If you can shoot a 3 in JUCO, you can probably shoot a 3 in D1 and with Gibbs and Calhoun both graduating, I'd gladly take a 3 point specialist and Jackson looks like he can help with that.

Haha, took me longer to find his Twitter (about 3 mins). Once I had that it took 10 seconds to find his snap. Great behind the scenes footage can be caught on snap during visits.

Sam's team was absolutely loaded, many D-1 guys and they had a smaller guy run point a lot. Not even wading into argument but Sam's team was like a juco all-star team!

I miss "Johnny-Time". Likely the best lefty JC transfer at UConn since Jimmy Foster.

Selvie brought so much energy to our frontcourt, something we currently need. I'd prefer we bring in a juco like that.. A PF/C that is tough around the basket. Can rebound with the best of them and is physical and strong

Unfortunately had the same IQ as what we currently have also.

Mulder, Kentucky's JuCo player, has barely seen the court this season, I wonder why. As for the rest of you, the most common phrase in this whole thread has been "Selvie". If you think Jackson will bring the same value as Selvie simply because they were both JUCO players, then I don't know what to tell you because the logic behind that is rock solid.
