Asked by Kerith Burke on the “GA Show” this week to name the most improved player, the Coach said w/out hesitating: Briana Pulido. He then went on to explain how tough Polly's job is keeping up with her very difficult pre-med courses and coming to practices and games. Geno has given her a carte blanche to set her own schedule. He asked her what was most important: playing basketball or preparing for her ambitious career? No brainer.

In the same Show, Kathy Auriemma commented on how much care Geno takes of his players, how he makes them one of his family. We've all seen the gatherings at the Auriemma home for holidays and other celebrations, and we have noted the attachment Coach's players develop for him and his program. Players like Sue Bird have attributed her growing up in large part to her time at UConn. She's not alone.

By the way, Geno was serious in dubbing Polly the MIP. He said she's often in the gym by herself catching balls from the ball machine in order to practice her 3's. Frequently, when Polly's White team competes against the Blue, Geno sets the objective at White team down by 2 with 20 seconds to play. It's Polly's 3 that usually wins the challenge.

Tough guy? Nah. Big lug.

Not only most improved, but most improved in the AAC! I liked that segment they did on Polly. Basically he said that he lets her decide if she travels and that sometimes she wants to go and isn't sure if she should and Geno says "What's more important, going to Tulsa or studying for your test, and she says I know, I know." Then while the team is away and she's home, she practices by herself with the basketball gun, and sends videos of her practicing. Such a great story.

And he is SUCH a jerk. EVERYBODY hates him. He is SOOOOOO bad for the game. Evil incarnate.

Geno is the Pit Bull of Basketball; hated by everyone with a knee-jerk response, respected, admired, and loved by the people who get to know him.

I hear that Pat was the same way.
