Dylan Bundy (4th overall pick last year) will start against Barnes tomorrow night. Neither has allowed a run this year. Bundy has only pitched 9 innings over 3 starts due to strict innings limits at this point, but retired 26 straight batters to start his professional career. Both guys are putting up insane numbers so far. Should be a good one tomorrow.

Bundy only went 4, but it was 12 up 12 down for him - pretty impressive.

Barnes went 5 and, surprise surprise, allowed no runs. 3 hits, 2 walks, 9 Ks. He now has 34 Ks in 21.0 IP.

Gotta think that at some point they will either have him start working explicitly on his secondary pitches or, if they think they are already refined to the point that they will dominate A ball all year (I think they are), he will move up to A+ and work on them there. Wouldn't expect the 19th overall pick to spend a full season at A ball anyways.

We know the fastball is MLB ready, just need to refine the off speed stuff.

9 strikeouts in 5 innings? Damn that's good.

It's pretty much become par for the course for Barnes. He is only at A ball where IMO he will overmatch virtually everyone he faces. The guy Bundy that he just pitched against almost retired the first 27 batters he faced (scattered across multiple starts). High picks like them belong at A+ at least.

Probably just getting them acclimated to pro ball and all that jazz. Or keeping them there because the weather in their A+ affiliate is colder and they want to protect their arms. I think Barnes is pitching in Georgia, not sure where Boston's A+ team is but weather could be a factor.

Is Lowell the top A team for Boston? Maybe a stop at a couple of A teams this year and AA Portland next year with a few starts at AAA Pawtucket late in the year.....with a shot at making the Boston roster in the spring of 2014?

Lowell is the Short Season team for Boston. Typically a destination for mid-late round draft picks that they sign immediately and want to get on the field right away for a half season. He'll be in Salem for A+ and Portland for AA. Will probably skip AAA Pawtucket if things go as they theoretically should for a top pitching prospect.
