Interesting article. I'm not sure about the soft tissue part of it but the Sox have built a pretty organization that should make them competitive for some time. Their starting pitching is deep and talented and there is a lot of help down on the farm. Catching will be a team strength in the near future. They could be introducing three talented position players this year in Bogaerts, Middlebrooks and Bradley. There are several others waiting in the wings in Cecchini, Brentz, Betts and Hassan.

Aside from the talent issue, the one thing that made them better than anyone else was that they intentionally looked for good character players. There were virtually no distracting clubhouse issues in 2013.

The whole soft tissue thing sounds interesting and if it works more teams will hire a specialist.
The Sox in the past have traded away some of their top prospects to fill a short term need. A few of those trades (Beckett/Ramirez) worked out but many more didn't.They aren't doing that any longer as they are taking a long term approach to building a solid organization and I think you will see more teams employing a similar philosophy. The result is that they are loaded with young talent.
The Sox have also been a little lucky. Players like Gomes and Karp had great years, Lackey came back from Polokaville and the pitching stayed relatively healthy with the exception of Bucholz.
As with every team, injuries will play a major role this season. Take Ortiz out of the lineup and all of a sudden the Sox could have a problem scoring runs. Teams have to be good to win a championship but they also have to be a little lucky.

They did so last year, and that's OK. Besides Beckett and Ramirez, they never would have gotten Pedro without trading prospects. There were many folks at the time that were saying the Sox would rue the day they traded Carl Pavano. The trick is to build enough organizational depth which it sounds like the Sox have.

Hadn't heard that Inglesias was injured. I don't know if he'll ever hit over .250 but he is the best looking SS to come along in quite awhile. He paid his dues in the minors and I'd like to see him have a good career.

The Sox traded Carl for Pedro along with prospects.
