Any 'Yarders remember a kid by the name of Zak Penwell, he was a Senior walk-on (I believe) Defensive Tackle (#94) for UConn back in 2007. The kid was a veteran, served 6 years in the Air Force, deployed overseas, and then came home and got into UConn. If that wasn't enough, he was from Fairbanks, Alaska... ALASKA! He was actually the first Alaskian ever to letter for UConn Football.
I just was watching the Meieke Car Care Bowl from back in '07 and ESPN made a point of talking about Penwell during the game. Apparently he was one of 12 former service members who were back then on D1 rosters nationwide.
I looked him up. Apparently now he's the Strenght & Conditioning coach for the India Basketball team... Check out this article on him: http://www.sportskeeda.com/basketba...a-basketball-team-strength-conditioning-coach
Pretty neat story that I thought I should share.
