Patrick Kirtland UConn hockey captain for 2015-16. Shawn Pauly and Derek Pratt the A's. Players, including outgoing srs, and coaches vote.
Wow another fleet footed, high scoring player wearing the big C next year for Uconn. The XL Center faithful lost that bet we thought for sure either Kirtland - Pauly or both would be candidates for the chopping block. Hopefully they have a Jack Eichel (BU) type player coming in next year if not keep the XL Center beer stocked and cold because it could be another long year.

Didn't realize you had to be a fleet footed, high scoring player to be Captain/AC - always thought it had more to do with respect and leadership.

I agree you need those qualities also but we have watched the Kirtland/Pauley type play for 3 years now but more specifically last year in the new league (which as a hockey fan excited about HE) but lets not sugar coat those two players looked out of place last year so we who as fans are probably surprised to see them as leaders - it must be leadership qualities off the ice because its doesnt show on the ice. Just an observation thats all.

Mike Eruzione was the last person on the board for the 1980 US team. A hockey squad is as much about cohesion and teamwork as it is skating and stickhandling ability. We are not yet so talent rich that we can ignore the chemistry of the locker room. If these guys are respected enough to be chosen, then their talent level is more than adequate.

Kirtland is a valuable asset on the PK while bringing some sand paper to the lineup. Pauly led the team in pts. (20 ovr) and was 2nd in HE play with 15 behind Gerling who had 17. Sure he had a poor +/- but then again so did almost everybody on the team outside of Richardson, Naas and Austin.

This is a team transitioning, still, from AHA to Hockey East. They won 10 games which is about 6 more than most people expected. Beat 4-5 teams playing this week, again about 4-5 more than most expected. Pat Kirkland plays hard. He gets in front of pucks. He is clearly respected by coaches and teammates.

Of course they looked out of place! When they committed (at least in Kirtland's case) HE wasn't even in the discussion! Kirtland committed to an Atlantic Hockey Conference team and has acquitted himself quite well given the circumstances in which he has been placed. Maine, Merrimack, and UMASS would take a Kirtland type player in a heartbeat. Especially if he could help them finish higher in the standings than UCONN ... which they did not. Imagine what UCONN's roster will look like when they get to the HE minimum of 18 scholarships ... currently at 10.
