That was tongue in cheek.....schools like Duke, Kansas, UNC, UCLA, etc had a huge head start on us

According to Reese Davis, this puts us in the top-10 of all time....not bad for a school whose basketball history started about 30 years ago. First of many for Ollie, no doubt. Great stuff...
Please, I've been a UConn fan for almost 60years.
We were in the NCAA tourney ,sweet 16 and final 8 long before the Big East.
JC was a great coach and was able to elevate the program from a good regional BB school to a blue blood.
That doesn't preclude the fact that once UConn got on the big stage that given our love of BB some other coach might have been successful at making us a national power. The probabably of that happening were pretty good.
In fact much of the opposition from some of the Catholics to our inclusion was a fear of a built in advantages by a state flagship. They turned out to be correct. They still believe that. If the NBE took a vote only PC would want us.
In the last part of the 70's we were actually in ,with the future BE members, the crazy group of Eastern schools called the ECAC. It was a loose collection of many schools. We joined when the old Yankee conference lost it autobid ,so exclusion is not new to us.In fact the NCAA was going to rescind the autobids from ECAC. since there was no way everyone could play each and we weren't truly a classic conference. That led directly to the formation of the Big East.
Must ado is made about Geoegetown stopping Syracuses winning streak at their old field house of 50 games. The Tony Hanson UConn team beat up them up there to stop a simalarly long streak in the 70's.
We have a long proud basketball history

Honestly, I've never been this excited about a Sweet Sixteen. I think the APR ban and JC retirement was a reality check of just how lucky we were to enjoy the success of the JC era. And with it being Ollie's first, it like the program's first all over again.

I would assume Coach Ollie is the first Coach with only two years of head coaching experience at any level to reach the sweet 16. That's pretty cool.

This is a huge moment. Folks doubted coach Ollie. Doubted that he could coach, recruit, lead men, and other silly stuff. He is letting the fellas play, coaching but not over coaching, and just having keeping the program at a high level. Thank you, coach. Thank you, UConn. Keep grinding.
