Last word on Mikaela:
One European correspondent called the snow and weather conditions "horrible."
He is right. It was more of a survival exercise than a demonstration of alpine racing "mastery".
Wet Snow on top. Fog in the middle. Rain at the bottom. Visibility awful. Light flat. Course...
Hard to tell. The really difficult ruts are randomly located. So lots of luck is needed for all the racers.
Mickaela has the best balance (by far) of all the slalom racers.
So -- all other things being equal, she should have the best chance of winning. But she can hit a soft rut just the wrong...
Mikaela (age 18) finished 5th today. One half second behind the winner Tina Maze (age 31).
There were no other racers under 20 in the top 20. 5th is what we expected in GS.
She has won half the slalom races over the past two years; and is the favorite to win Slalom on Friday.
I have my...
Yes -- I was at Burke Mt Academy last Friday, Sat, Sun.
I haven't used my wheel chair for the last month. I use a walker when I want to go fast or far. I use a cane for extra safety/stability sometimes. Most walks short of 20 yards I just do without any "helpers." The walking is pretty slow and...
Mikaela is absolutely the nicest teen-ager I have ever known. HER HUMILITY IS EVEN GREATER THAN HER TALENT.
She will be the face of the US Ski Team in Russia next month. And she will get a huge amount of press. It will worth your time to read and to watch everything you can find about her --...
Thanks to all for your many kind thoughts and good wishes.
There are no Boneyarders more excited about this season than I. -----
Our present group of Huskies are going to be more fun to watch and cheer for than any other team since 1985, which is when I discovered Jenn Rizzotti and
her...
OSouthBranch is doing just fine. Here's the skinny:
I keep in touch with SouthBranch on a regular basis. He is one of my most precious UConn friends. He had some health problems two years ago; but he has "been repaired under warranty " and is happy and healthy now. His home in Springfield was...
Michelle Wie has no credentials to support her selection. There are a half-dozen young American players who are ahead of Wie on the money list, on scoring average, on driving accuracy, and other key stats. Plus -- her putting has been a nightmare for the past 3-4 years. (Hot putters are the key...
Bria Hartley played like an AA all through the University Games. She was exceptional. And she got very big props from Coach Coale.
I expect a banner season from Bria. Forget last season. Bria was playing on a bum ankle all year -- even in th Final Four.
She was an excellent shooter in all...
A'ja is a terrific rebounder; and, as far as I know, she has never turned a defensive rebound into an immediate score at the opponents end of the court -- which Swin has done.
There are rules against student/faculty hook-ups on many campuses; but the rules are often broken. In most cases, both the students and teachers are of "legal age"; and both are "by instinct" . Nature's callings are hard to regulate.
Just a respectful question:
Isn't that more of a classic "STUFF" than a "block?
Either way -- I agree we'll see a good number of both throughout the coming season.
Long time Headmaster, English teacher, coach of many sports and founder of the American Sports Academy movement speaking here:
For kids who are academically self-motivated, home schooling is a wonderful choice! And an especially good preparation for college. For smart kids and elite athletes...
So UConn has had five starters on the two USA Teams. And it would have been six had Steph been playing. Does any other school have even tw0 starters total on the two USA Teams?
My bet is that if UConn took back Bria and KML from the WUG Team, and added Stewie, and Tuck and MoJeff, and Dolson...
There is an interesting similarity here between Maya and Kalena. As freshmen, both had the hustle gene; but they did not know where to hustle to. Geno has generated many laughs talking about Maya "always moving on the court; but not knowing where (for maximum effectiveness) she was supposed to...
Kelly Faris should get a big "Thank you" phone call from Sherri Coale for helping Team USA beat Australia at the WUG's yesterday.
All UConn fans know how much respect Kalena has had for Kelly over the past two years -- and how strong Kalena's commitment has been to "play like Kelly" for the...
USA rebounding STINKS. For the entire 1st half there were 2, 3, or 4 Aussies crashing the boards for every rebound -- and seldom more than one USA rebounder, and often ZERO USA players going for a rebound -- on either end of the court.
If the Americans were making half an effort to get...
MoJeff had 4 of the USA assists -- the most by any USA player.
And she had 6 rebounds (all defensive) -- 3rd best behind Stewie (10 and A'ja Wilson (9). Not bad for a "peanut."
Sherri is the best sports writer in America. And 2nd place isn't even close.
I have read her blog on a regular basis ever since she became the Sooners' WCBB coach. She has an English Teacher's writing skills (and then some); and she has wonderful insights on coaching and playing women's...
