Maybe the lower FBS schools have to think like the AFL did in 1960. Be experimental a with a more exciting brand of football. But we'd still be limited by the NCAA, so I'm not so sure how much freedom we'd have to do very much.
We chose to sacrifice football to sustain basketball success. Was that a good decision? IDK. I still think football can succeed, but the odds aren’t good. Last year looks like a sweet aberration.
I’m in the far northern suburbs and I drive slow. If we were 2-3 or 3-2, I’d go. I’m an empty nester now, but back in 2009 (or so) I packed the whole family in the car and we saw the Huskies dominate Baylor in Waco. That was fun.
Until the 1980’s when both programs became respectable, I remember Northwestern and Kansas State being the dregs of college football for decades. They had 0,1, or 2 wins every year (or so it seemed). I hope we’re not headed down that path.
SMU has access to more money. It’s in the top recruiting area in the nation (over 5% of all D-1 players are from DFW/North Texas). It’s in the 4th biggest metro area (set to pass Chicago to be #3 by 2035). And they have the best helmet/uni combination in the country.
Academically SMU is pretty...
UConn
UMass
BC
Army
Rutgers
Syracuse
Temple
Pitt
Navy
Maryland
Penn State
WVU
It would be a decent academic conference with minimal travel costs. Athletes would love it.
But it’s far more likely that I’ll be abducted by aliens this morning than that would ever happen.
I was a big supporter of the AAC since both of my schools were in the conference. But we’ve moved on and the top teams have left the AAC. There is zero chance we go back.
