You're crazy. Governor Malloy the only politician to do anything positive for the Hartford hockey season since Ella Grasso raised the Civic Center roof: he is 100% responsible for UConn's men's hockey team joining Hockey East and making Hartford their home. This will help fire up the Hartford...
Biggest nutshot: Hartford/New Haven television market.
All the other potential markets have major league sports teams. We have nothing, the AAC is the biggest draw in town. Connecticut gets the shaft yet again, we don't have the Saints or Astros or Magic or Flyers or Cowboys or Buccaneers or...
While this is sad and tragic, I don't think there's a professional sports team that wouldn't have a moment of silence for a police officer or firefighter killed in their city. Very weird to post this here, especially with the kudos to the Rangers angle.
UConn didn't get out-hustled by Louisville. UConn was too loyal to the Big East when Pittsburgh and Syracuse left. But the ACC chose Louisville. Not a damn thing UConn could have done. A couple more powerpoint presentations and press conferences would not have changed anything.
Hockey East would be glad to stay in the XL Center. It gives them more exposure than Storrs, bylaws be damned.
The team would benefit from better on-campus facilities, but it's so far down the pike at the moment. Maybe after the other sports figure out their conference situation it could...
I played at the rink too, remember the cold hitting my face through my facemask. I saw the first game ever at Freitas as well and thought it was amazing at the time but now the program has totally outgrown it. I liked Storrs and have fond memories but since I left UConn I rarely get up there...
I've been following and watching the team since it was in Division III playing St. Anselm outdoors. Give me a break. And Cav will continue to build this team, he's not going anywhere and the program is moving forwards.
It's important is a way to say it's something we want but it's not something we're actually doing. In a perfect world there would be a beautiful hockey arena in Storrs but there is no impetus for it at the moment and everyone else recognizes that but you. Stop being irate about reality.
I think you're just hearing what you want to hear. All parties are extremely content with the XL Center. If the Wolf Pack leave, they'll be even happier. The success of UConn hockey at the XL Center is too big to throw away at this point and UConn and Hockey East both recognize that.
Definitely UConn is the best in the northeast. We have the most robust consistently good programs. If not for the politics of conference realignment, we'd be at the top of the ACC where we belong.
With the success of the XL Center I don't see this project being a priority in a state budget crunch. There are no deadlines. Hockey East is content with the XL Center. Freitas is great as a practice rink. Hopefully someday it's improved and looks less cheap.
I agree it's a possible scenario for both ACC and Big 10 before UCONN gets hitched with the Big 12, if that's really how it's going to go down. Anything is possible, how do we know what's not a possibility.
I actually prefer the Olympic size. I love watching European hockey leagues and the KHL on TV. Hockey is more entertaining with more space. But the UConn team will be playing at the XL Center which is NHL size, and also players might prefer an NHL size if they have NHL aspirations. So...
How about building the new barn in the Buckland Hills area? If it were attached to the mall it could help get the students to games as they can shop before or after.
I agree with Jeff Jacobs 100%. I am not old fashioned or idealistic about UConn or college sports in general, and have no particular allegiance to Storrs, although I find it pleasant, the teams are in a much bigger marketplace in Hartford.
Your first paragraph makes no sense and I never said what you're saying my theory is. SNY bought UConn rights so the network could expand in Connecticut. The UConn fanbase in New York City is totally negligible to any advertiser!
I'm actually a UConn fan but I don't believe in spreading fantasy in the hopes that people believe it's true. UConn is on SNY so that network can spread into Connecticut, not the other way around. It's wishful thinking that there is a significant Huskies fanbase in New York.
Anyone who freaks out that UConn isn't using the charity game at Taft (which is closer to Sacred Heart) in their attendance numbers is a turd, plain and simple.
Maybe it should go next to Rentschler Field. The students ignored the program for years, it took a move to Hartford to ignite it. There's no going back now.
For the record I know who Jack Eichel is and have for quite a while and have seen him play many times. I have also watched 18-year-olds like Hartford's own Chris Pronger get thrown in the NHL too early and struggle needlessly. Hopefully we see Jack return to the XL Center with the Terriers...
I don't have a problem with building a new arena on campus, the more rinks the better. I just think all home games should be played in Hartford at the XL Center.
Crowds will become more engaged and the loudness will increase. If Hartford keeps showing up, UConn hockey would never skate away from that to go back to playing on campus. No way! The players all love playing at the XL Center too.
