Mick Cronin on UCONN and some Hurley Tidbits

Disagree there, I think UCLA may come back in the B10. It opens up national recruiting for them. Travel will be an issue.

OT: John Calipari to return as Kentucky men's basketball coach

Yep, that's why I want Kentucky to ask AD Dave how to do it. If he can increase the payout from $33 million to $40 million, Kentucky may be broke for a generation.

OT: John Calipari to return as Kentucky men's basketball coach

The AD should ask Dave Benedict to mentor him on how to get out of the $33 million Calipari will be owed when he's terminated.

The committee thought they deserved a 3 seed over SEC champion Auburn.

    Chief’s Briefs - Marquette Edition

Not too worried about Stewart, Hurley knows he's a future star, UConn has a good environment and is competitive with NIL, and Stewart fit with the culture and has earned a significant role. He must know he'll be a leader at UConn next year. I'm more worried about the guys that didn't earn time...

UConn #1 Overall Seed - Impressive In 3 Bid League

Very impressive that the SEC champion got a 4 seed, Big 10 champion a 3 seed, and the Big 12 champion got a 2 seed. You've got to hand it to these conferences getting such high seeds for their champions.

    #1 and #2 Seed Discussion

Auburn is ahead of Tennessee for a #2 seed from the SEC. I'd put Iowa State as the last 1 seed but I could see Auburn. UNC or Arizona would be next on my list.

    Down goes Houston

I don't know, Houston has had injuries and as we saw against Iowa State isn't the same team that was so dominant for most of the season. Purdue also seems limited and unlikely to be as successful outside the Big Ten. Purdue's early season wins against Xavier, Gonzaga, Tennessee, Marquette...

    Chief’s Briefs - Marquette Edition

Yes, the development of Stewart, Diarra, and Samson has been impressive and bodes well for next year. Ball showed promise while filling in for Castle early in the year, but now seems to have fallen out of the rotation entirely. Danny has mentioned that the portal is beckoning to UConn players...

    Drew Pyne enters the portal

If I could make a million dollars a year playing college football, I might have stayed in college to age 28 while I figured out what to do afterward.

    The Judge Listens

You used to be a hanging judge. Now you're an ignoring judge. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the mojo strategy of the Cuse board on behalf of their NIT team?

    2025 Recruiting: Dwayne Aristode

Samson played a grand total of 115 minutes before this year, the equivalent of 3 games. Much of it was in garbage time or against weak teams. This year, in which he has 530 minutes so far, is his first real competitive experience. Big men need that experience to see their weaknesses on film...

2024 Recruiting: Liam McNeeley Reopens Recruitment

I thought Liam McNeeley was really good in the Taken series, amazing that he's good at basketball too.

    Ngongba Back in play?

If you want to go the Calipari way and base recruiting on "getting players to the NBA", then you want the one-and-done freshmen, not the college-successful juniors.

Chief’s Briefs - Seton Hall Edition

Let me see if I have this straight: The most successful coach in college basketball today needs to "change his thinking & approach" A guy on most NBA lottery boards should stay one more year The coach who has built the best rosters in college ball for two years running, and top 5 offenses per...

Pitt's Capel goes after Big 12 and efficiency ratings

Isn't it the Big Ten's scheduling philosophy that is the best? Annually they get a lot of teams in and with high seeds, but underperform. The Big 12 does about as expected.

Pitt's Capel goes after Big 12 and efficiency ratings

We had the Clemson coach saying the same thing a few days ago. Seems like the ACC is worried about bids/tournament credits and has distributed talking points to coaches.

    classy letter. Good for them.

Duke loses (again)...so, Cooper, maybe you want to reconsider?

You don't know any of that. UConn may have been a close #2. It's unlikely he wants to be pampered, if he did he never would have put in the work to become so good at basketball. These kinds of posts are very distasteful.

ACC:... “The 4 teams they have added since 2013 are hurting more than helping.”

The ACC is the Typhoid Mary of conferences. Schools that touch them turn putrid.

    Roumoglou

I doubt Danny Hurley's ever gone harder after anyone than he did for Cooper Flagg. But, it is probably why we're not reaching for weaker 2024s, and think the portal will be sufficient to fill out the team. Nowell-Diarra-Ball, Ross-Stewart-Roumoglou, Johnson-Singare is a decent core.

Ah, but you can't fool the algorithms!

The analytics accurately reflect how teams have performed to date. We hope UConn has more upside than the other teams, and will be the best in March. To answer superjohn's question: Right now I would take Houston over UConn on a neutral court, and UConn over Bama, BYU, and UNC. But in March I...

Anyone else notice this similarity to last year

Fair enough, but the solution is for him to learn how to be an active participant in the offense. He has the elements to be successful, he just needs to put it together. I think there will be enough minutes with Newton on the floor, Castle off, for the coaches to get a read on the +/- and make...
