The ABSOLUTE MOST IMPORTANT hire..replacing Jerry Martin

Since Martin was responsible for all sports, not just football, this seems like a Warde Manuel decision. Diaco might have had a say since strength & conditioning is football-centric, but it seems like if Auriemma, etc. had wanted Martin to stay that badly they would have created a separate S&C...

Key Texas Booster Ticked Off Over Strong

Except Burton was right. Charlie Strong has had very recent success and is a coach on the rise. Pretty much the antithesis of PP.

Key Texas Booster Ticked Off Over Strong

Wow. Guess ol' Red was pissed they couldn't get Saban. When you have a crapload of money like that I guess you don't have to worry about sounding racist. I think that card gets played too often, but this is one case where people might have a point if they call Red on it. Red sounds like the CT...

    Our First (or Third) Name

Here we go. . . . .why bother responding if that's the way you feel. This program just had a horrendous experience with over-the-hill coaches. I get that not everyone over 60 is the reincarnation of P/GDL (speaking of vampires) but Bill Snyder, Nick Saban, Don Brown etc. are the exception not...

    Our First (or Third) Name

Hope coach D knows what he's doing. Hope this isn't the OC hire. On the back nine of his career 63 years old (eyebrows raised). buffalo 83rd in total offense this year, 77nd last year. I do like the West Point background.

For ESPN Millions to remain in CT

I don't underestimate the power of a vindictive corporation, but the chances of them pulling up stakes in Connecticut because the state leaned on them to help in CR, especially in the next five years, are pretty much zero.

For ESPN Millions to remain in CT

Respectfully disagree. Noeyo. Think this is VERY related to CR discussion. 260 million reasons why ESPN should have been/needs to make sure UConn is taken care of in CR. I expect the "we can't be mean to them or they'll move" and the "we have no right to expect them to help UConn in CR" crowd...

Next Task for WM - beef up the football schedule

Hope Warde is smart enough to tell Julie Hermann that if she doesn't do a football deal with UConn she and C. Vivian can forget about playing the 8-time national champions. Should be how Warde is playing this game.

Remembered that rumored game against the Irish at Fenway

depends on how you define begging. To me begging is a one-off one-away. If it's a 1-1-1 (Gillette plus a home-and-home) i don't think that's begging. I take it in two seconds.

"How Did UConn Lose a Game with This Guy?"

Had to laugh when I saw the thread title. Similar comments after last year's draft when 5 guys got drafted from a 5-7 team that lost to Western Michigan & Temple. But, you know, cupboard bare, train wreck, etc etc.

Remembered that rumored game against the Irish at Fenway

Not going to get into the weeds on this but there are several very recent football schedule arrangements (Cincy-Michigan, for example) that were most definitely tied to hoop scheduling. We'll see if it applies here. You know Muffett wants to keep playing the women's hoop series. I hope Geno...

Remembered that rumored game against the Irish at Fenway

Will give WM benefit of the doubt on this one. Sunday they announced the ND-UConn hoop series is continuing. Between that and Diaco MAYBE there's a football tie-in. I hope so.

Next Task for WM - beef up the football schedule

Not specifically directing this specifically at you Broch, but, simply, beggars -- and as much as everyonel hates it, that's what UConn is for the time being in football scheduling -- can't be choosers. Can't turn down an opportunity hoping something "better" might come along.

Remembered that rumored game against the Irish at Fenway

Fan comfort is not even close to the point of playing at Fenway. It's a one-off that creates a little bit of buzz that UConn could really use. Hope WM didn't stumble in negotiating this the first time around.

Next Task for WM - beef up the football schedule

Going to the OP's point, very simple. No FCS games and SELECTED one-off 1-aways and 2-for-1s with P5s until CR gets resolved.

    Big Ten's Move

No disrespect to OP but came here thinking the B10 made a move; but quickly figured out that wasn't the intent. Very, very hard to believe the people who make these kind of decisionswould think Rutgers' basketball fan "base" would be worth moving the B10 tourney from midwest to NYC. . . .btw...

Sort of OT: Play LL final at Shenkman

This was suggested by a couple of high school writers Monday. Seems like logistical hurdles could be overcome. No big crowd and no bands & cheerleaders would stink, but beats not playing the game at all. CIAC declaring co-champs if game not played.

McHugh weighs in on Diaco hire (OMG)

Hey, tell me that the Fillippone-Marinelli crowd had zero contact with your guy in the days leading up to the P hire. The existence of that letter is a fact. My opinion is it is plausible your guy had a hand in it. It's really something these lengths -- including being snide and condescending...

McHugh weighs in on Diaco hire (OMG)

I'll respectfully disagree with that. He bears some responsibility. I'll assume he was at the Rent for the Cincy game last year and like the rest of us saw how dead the crowd and team was -- with a bowl berth on the line a week after beating a ranked team on the road! I get the fact he doesn't...

McHugh weighs in on Diaco hire (OMG)

No, no, no, don't think in any way "evil" or he was "conspiring" to enrich P. Just think a lot of old-timer football people in this state, including McHugh, had a blind spot when it came to P, which combined with a weak and football-ignorant AD and an interim president who could not have cared...

McHugh weighs in on Diaco hire (OMG)

Let me ask you this, Fish. Forget about the other states. Just focus on the CT guys. The Fillippone-Marinelli crowd have such a high enough opinion of themselves that they thought their letter would carry some weight. Looks like it did. If they have high enough opinion of themselves to write...

McHugh weighs in on Diaco hire (OMG)

Bill, your input is appreciated (good to know BY connections run deep). But with all due respect have a hard time believing Larry was that opposed to P, especially since he had to know about Burton's objections and the support of CT coaches. I'd be very interested to know if CT coaches...

McHugh weighs in on Diaco hire (OMG)

In normal times I would agree with that. It could be argued the P hire allowed Louisville to jump UConn in the CR mess, at which point the acceptability level of the screw up becomes much lower. But you're right, LMcH has his power base and his P mishandling isn't going to dislodge him. Maybe he...

Which in itself is at least a 15-yard penalty. "Yes Jeff you have my blessing to completely ignore a multi-million-dollar donor". JH didn't wipe his rear end w/o checking with Larry. JH is guilty of lots of things but find it very hard to believe he didn't go to Larry and say "you know, Burton...

McHugh weighs in on Diaco hire (OMG)

Follow the CT HS FB coaches assn. ties. McHugh still closely associated with the Filippone-Marinelli crowd, the same one that wrote the infamous "endorsement" letter. IMO Larry had them write it to pave the way for P. I've said before than overall McHugh has done a great job for UConn. But he...

McHugh weighs in on Diaco hire (OMG)

The ultimate untold story. Think it went a lot further than that. A LOT further. From Courant Jan. 2011: Larry McHugh, the chairman of UConn's Board of Trustees and former Xavier football coach, called Pasqualoni a perfect role model for young coaches in the state.. "His integrity and his...

Why the American may be perfect for UConn.

Pal presents a plausible scenario but to make it work need to boost OOC strength of schedule. No more Stony Brooks/Villanovas IMO. That means more of the dreaded 1-aways people around here usually shoot down.

McHugh weighs in on Diaco hire (OMG)

Let me get this right. The same guy who pushed Hathaway to bring Pasqualoni here (pissing off a major donor in the process) is now acting as if he had nothing to do with it? Well, at least this time he had the sense to back away and leave the search to professionals. But jeez, don't pretend...

Would you want TJ as an assistant?

I don't get this. TJ was a good soldier when it was obvious he was under the P/GDL lock and key. What makes people think he is going to turn into a cancer all of a sudden if he stays? Again, TJ will have a chance to make more money here as an OC than he will pretty much anywhere else in the...
