Talk to me about replacing windows...

I,m a restoration contractor. Have done dozens of whole house window replacement jobs. Usually either Marvin or Andersen inserts. Both of those companies products have issues. The alternatives I have looked at have issues as well. The sales pitches of the big replacement companies are...

Elite Eight Thread (non UConn games)

Neither Burns or Edey seems capable of running at all. Couldn’t a team like St. John's just run those players into irrelevance ?

A bit. Hides the hairballs until you do clean though.

Schluter Kerdi-Board? Any of you used it before?

I do half a dozen or so shower pans a year. It’s probably about half preformed pan and half membrane now. When I do a membrane system I use a linear drain and frame my slope since it is only one direction with the linear drain. I always use 1/2“ hardibacker for my walls. I’m almost 60 and have...

The R and R HOF does not consider prog rock to be a form of rock music despite having “rock” in the description. Hip hop and country are , however.

    Heat Pumps

I'm a contractor in CT. I have many clients that I have helped convert to heat pump systems. My hvac guy uses Mitsubishi Hyper heat models and my clients have had no complaints about them keeping up even at -10 degrees. Hvac guy has done efficiency calculations and admits that the split system...

Your favorite cooking method to eat a turkey

I've posted about this method before. It’s super simple and always results in a moist, even cooked bird. About the time when you would foil tent, add a layer of bacon instead.

    Off Topic: UConn Dairy Bar

My daughter, who worked there when she was a student, claims that the dairy bar ice cream couldn’t be sold in supermarkets because the fat content exceeds some standard for commercial ice cream. I haven’t heard anything that corroborates that but it tastes like it may be true.

    OT: Best Pizza in CT

There’s a new place in downtown Willimantic called Trigo. Only been once so far but the pizza was exceptional. Wood fired ovens, thin crust and some interesting pies.

    OT: bear (tv show)

Sure. Except that the handle had already broken off once so it got replaced with another breakaway handle but wasn’t fixed? And the restaurant passed a safety inspection in between those events? And the head chef was put on that job even though there was a maintenance guy? And when stuck in the...

    OT: bear (tv show)

I loved season one. Worked in restaurant during high school and they perfectly captured the stress of a kitchen during a meal rush time. The attention to detail was impeccable. I didn’t like season 2. Seven fishes episo had the stress but was over the top and detracted from the reality captured...

    OT: Best Pizza in CT

I have said this here in the past, but I don't think it was widely accepted; the Storrs downtown was not built for the benefit of the town residents in any way, shape or form. Residents were asked what the priorities were for a downtown and the answers were sidewalk cafes, on street parking...

    OT: Best Pizza in CT

I've been living in Storrs for the last 25 years and seen it all come and go. Part of the issue here is that standards have gone way up. I was a Gumby's guy back in the day, but if that same pizza was still available I don’t think I could take two bites of it. Pizza Mike's, Willington, Apollo...

Things one wants to say to Sir Charles

Huh? Charles has literally said he is not a fan of college basketball because it is a “coach's game” as opposed to the NBA which is a player's game. It's fine for him to have an opinion on things, but he might as well qualify it as just a wild guess. His reason for picking the zags was they...

Is there a “nice” restaurant in Storrs?

appeasing both groups (and maybe university employees as well) would seem like the smart play, but based on results they didn’t even try. How is it even possible to create a downtown and end up with even fewer restaurants than when there was no town.

Is there a “nice” restaurant in Storrs?

Most residents were against the creation of the downtown, because they know the university botches everything that has the potential to improve the town.

    Turkey Day Menu Discussion

I host around 20 relatives every year and this is now my go to for cooking turkey. Draping it with bacon for last 45 minutes of the cook. Mashed, roasted root vegetables, onion casserole, Kung pao brussel sprouts, peas, carrots, kimpira. My dad always brings a smoked salmon as an appetizer...

    Varmint chewing up firewood

I work on old homes and have to analyze dust piles all the time. I can usually tell what caused what for damage by the dust. Rodents are very unlikely to create dust in wood pile. When they gnaw it is to gain access. Usually making a small hole larger. They don’t eat wood or use it for nesting...

    Anyone recently finish their basement?

No, it’s not true. It can’t be included in a comp value and can’t be listed as square footage but if it adds value to the house it will be reflected in the asking price. Decks and landscaping aren’t square footage either. But people will pay more for a house with a nice yard.

    Anyone recently finish their basement?

Dry and some natural light go a long way in a finished basement. If possible try to have the ceiling sheetrocked instead of using a drop ceiling. Drop ceilings just scream “basement!” I utilize access panels where there are utility boxes, shut offs or cleanouts. I try to set up chases for...

OT: anyone an electric guitar techie?

No electrician uses common grounds anymore unless they have antique wire they are looking to use up. Modern wire all has its own ground wire and if the job was inspected that was the first thing (sometimes the only thing) they check.

Sell your practice amps and buy the biggest stack you can find. Plug in and turn it all the way up. Start playing. No one will complain about the hum. IAS . Doesn’t sound like the guitar is the issue. But I have seen some issues that were tough or almost impossible to diagnose. Does the hum...

    San Francisco city tours?
