Food and Drink Recommendations Portsmouth NH

Black Birch is a must whenever I visit my folks, who live about 15 minutes from Portsmouth. They don't take reservations, so the wait might be pretty long on the weekend (I always go during the week, and it's rarely over 20 minutes). They serve you beer/wine/cocktails while you wait to help you...

    OT: Proper Cloth

I have three shirts from Proper Cloth and I'm very pleased with all of them. The fit of each was right on the money on arrival, and the fabrics feel good and have original style while remaining understated. To compare, I had three shirts made at a very well reviewed tailor in Thailand, but two...

Well, that was all right, no?

I think Omar can provide great bench minutes depending on who's on the court with him. Last night, a lot of his minutes came in a stagnant offense, without someone driving the ball and moving the defense. Hamilton and Gibbs were getting into the lane, but Omar wasn't out there with them very...

    OT: Yellowstone NP 2016

Sorry, I gotta make a shameless plug here. I work for a website that takes user input and automatically generates plans of what to see and do on vacation. It doesn't quite match expert human advice, but it can come pretty close and it takes a lot less time than researching dozens of sites on...

    RIP Jerry Tarkanian

Tark might own an outlaw rep, but I like this story by Andy Katz about his loyalty to his past players.

OT: San Diego, Chicago, Seattle, Denver

I went to grad school out in Seattle from 2009-2011, so take anything I say from the perspective of a broke student. First off, the bad weather is and isn't a myth. Yeah, it rains frequently there, but the volume of annual rain is supposedly less in Seattle than in New York or Boston. Most of...

    Hamilton is a stud

With his build and skill set, D Ham reminds me of Chris Douglas Roberts at Memphis. D Ham looks to be further along in his development entering college, but CDR left Memphis as a tall guard who could score all over the court, rebound and pass. I don't expect Hamilton to have a season like CDR's...

OT: NCAA investigating new Tennessee coach

This reminds me of that Seinfeld episode when Costanza quits his job with Mr. Tuttle to go work for Mr. Penske after hearing that he's "Penske material." When he arrives at his new job, he discovers that the entire board of Penske's company is under indictment and not currently hiring.

“He’s very versatile, he’s like a point forward,” Jordan said. At last, we finally have a point forward! I can finally get over losing Tobias Harris to Tennessee.

    Gloucester/Portsmouth...where to go?

I second the recommendation for the Beach Plum. Their lobster rolls are absolutely stuffed, and the ice cream's also good. My folks live about a 5-minute bike ride away from it, so I always hit that place up when I visit them. For fresh lobster around Portsmouth, you won't do better than...

    calipari's "list"

Cal seems to have lost touch with what's important to recruits. Some of the questions at the top of his list should include: May I join your program even if someone else takes my SAT? Is there room on your staff for my father and/or AAU coach? Will your university hand out a scholarship to...

    HUGE In-Home for Ollie Today

Thanks for the scoop, 3. Can you estimate, on average, how many in-home visits recruits have with coaches? Recruiting is a form of sales, and there seems to be a clear sales pipeline associated with the process. I don't follow it all that closely, but it appears to go something like this...

UNC's academic fraud going to Washington DC

The foremost economic principle of communism is that labor should own the means of production. A communist would support the unionization of NCAA athletes because it empowers the labor force. The NCAA prefers to exploit its labor to an extreme degree because gross exploitation reaps tremendous...

This paper got an A- in one of UNC's bogus classes from Sporting News

The writing might not be that lively and the overall structure could use some work, but hey, Mr. Blake's prose is crisp, his lead engaging, and his copy mostly clean (kudos for properly spelling the possessive pronoun 'its' - a point that probably escapes most Deadspin writers). This piece makes...

Uconn hits a low GSR rate of 8% - national average @ 70

"In figures released by the NCAA on Thursday, UConn scored an 8 percent graduation success rate for players who entered school between 2003 and 2006 — far below the national average of 74 percent in the sport. This period involves 12 players, only one of whom graduated." How many guys who...

Isaac Hamilton asked out of LOI with UTEP

Yes, a verbal commitment is non-binding. But supposedly it's an unwritten rule that coaches stop recruiting verbally committed players. A player that's reopened his recruitment is fair game, but other coaches are not supposed to actively influence that decision.

    I think we forget...

The guys that put the biscuit in the basket are the "stars" of the team. We already have two guys capable of doing that joining the program in 2014. I'm hoping we land another potential star, but I think we'd still have a great recruiting class if we sign solid role players.

Who do you think was the biggest recruiting miss from 2013?

Every kid that we recruited but didn't get was a recruiting miss...... for them. We'll be fine, but I'm not so sure about those kids.

ESPN series ranking the college programs who have produced the best NBA players

I'm not saying I remember them as great NBA players. I'm just trying to look at this through the eyes of the guy creating the list. He can say Walker made three All-Star appearances and that Mercer was a productive player for a handful of seasons. I think UConn should be third. I'm guessing...

ESPN series ranking the college programs who have produced the best NBA players

As impressed as I am that UConn's produced as much NBA talent as it has, the program's had two NBA All-Stars. Kentucky's produced four that were drafted later than 1989 (Mashburn, Magloire, Walker, and Rondo). They've also had a handful of other guys who've had solid NBA careers (Tayshaun...

ESPN series ranking the college programs who have produced the best NBA players

I think UConn should come in no worse than sixth. The only schools I can think of that have produced more and/or better NBA talent since 1989 are Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, and UCLA. Arizona's put a lot of players into the league too, though none have been as good as Ray Allen. If it wasn't...

When you're in Prague, go to Riegrovy Sady. It's a huge beer garden full of natives and ex-pats. If you've got some time after seeing the main sights in town, hang out for a bit in Žižkov. It's a non-touristy neighborhood around the TV tower, but still really nice. It used to be very "Czech,"...

    Roy Hibbert then and now

Hibbert's been productive since his rookie season. He improved a great deal over his college career, much like Thabeet, but Hibbert's looked like a solid NBA center from the moment he entered the league. While I hope Thabeet has more of an impact as his career goes on, Hibbert's always been way...

Dukes Skates On Lance Thomas Investigation

The fact that Lance Thomas didn't pay his bill isn't what should be damaging to Duke. He put down $30,000 in cash at the time of the purchase, nearly four months before playing for Duke in the 2010 national championship game. It looks like Thomas was accepting impermissible benefits - the kind...
