Signing Day Event Highlights

Bob Diaco and the UConn football coaching staff presented the 2015 recruiting class to about 100 donors, season ticket holders and media members earlier this afternoon at the Burton Family Football Complex.

The first full recruiting class with him at the helm, Diaco turned the mic over to his assistants to introduce the players. One by one, they stepped to the mic, presenting unique facts and highlights on the scholarship additions, twenty-two in total.

The intangible traits that Diaco preaches about, were evident. Winners, scholars, responsible players. He went into the RKG recruiting model, the ‘right kind of guys’ for UConn, which I talked about a few weeks ago.

He took questions from media members and fans, with a bravado and enthusiasm that gave a sense that him and his entire staff were satisfied with the accomplishments they’ve achieved on the trail.

On the highlight front, it was hard to not be impressed with WR Tyraiq Beal’s play-making ability with the ball in his hands. All players generated the usual ooh’s and aah’s from the fans in attendance.

The accolades were prevalent. WR Frank Battle was All-Miami-Dade County as voted by the Miami Herald. Miami-Dade is highly recognized as a recruiting hot bed. DL Kevin Murphy is ranked the top defensive lineman in Pennsylvania. Felton Blackwell and David Ryslik were ranked 1-2 as the top defensive linemen in New Jersey. There is state player of the year from Maine, DE Zordan Holman and state player of the year from New Hampshire, DL Phillippe Okounam.

At corner, is the lone player under 6′, Aaron Garland, the top cornerback in Illinois.

From top to bottom, you have legit talent, who also start in a sport other than football. For those that saw the Urban Meyer article on two-sport recruits at Ohio State, it makes sense.

How the class pans out will be seen over the next several years, but one thing is for sure, there’s excitement surrounding the 30 additions, 22 scholarship players that are coming to assist in Storrs.

We’ll have much more on today’s signing day event later this week.
