Reflecting on Veterans Day

@MattSchonvisky

“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”

That quote first appeared in 1933 and is believed to have been uttered by George Orwell, the famous writer. After all of these year’s, after WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the conflicts in the Middle East and 9/11, it still applies today.

Most generations have lived through wars and the suffering and loss that is their result.

UConn played in a city that was attacked on September 11th, 2001 against the United States Army over the weekend. The day did not only feature a football game, but was a display of what our nation is all about. The pageantry of the day turned the afternoon’s game, into a much bigger event.

Pregame, the Cadets marched in full dress and the West Point Parachute Team displayed their accuracy, delivering the game ball with all three jumpers landing on the Army logo at midfield. The national anthem concluded with a fly over by an Army helicopter.

At halftime, all branches of the armed forces were honored, as the UConn marching band spelled out USA across the field.

Between the third and fourth quarters, a beautiful rendition of ‘God Bless America’ was performed.

Questioning decisions made in a game, can be argued at any point and we can do so, because we are free. Just make sure you remember why at some point today.

To anyone that has served, for those around the world and away from your families, we should all be saying, ‘Thank You,’ we are all in debt to you.
