Malachi Richardson Talks UConn

Malachi Richardson is an elite 6’5″, 195 lbs. class of 2015 shooting guard out of New Jersey. He played with Team Final in the EYBL where he and his team made it to the final four in the tournament losing to Chris Paul’s AAU team. Despite being a grade below most of the players on his team and other teams he still got it done. He was a clear cut starter on his team due to his game.

He describes his offensive game as a, “Good shooter, [and] good scorer.” That’s evident as all throughout the Lebron James Skills Academy everything I saw about him said, “One of the best pure shooting strokes in high school,” or “Malachi Richardson is a gifted shooter.” In the game that his team lost in the final four of the EYBL he did everything to help his team win. In 36 minutes he had 23 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist and block, with 2 steals. However, he isn’t complacent with his current play telling me he’s, “Working to get better at everything.”

Malachi told me that the main reasons why UConn is an attractive school to him is, “The great coaching staff and the fact that great players have came out of UConn and went to the next level.” Many of those players have been at his position like the best three point shooter in NBA history Ray Allen, with Richard Hamilton, Ben Gordon, and the newest, Jeremy Lamb, among other players. He said he wants his college coach to be a, “Good teacher, good developer and [have] an actual relationship. Not just on the floor but off the court.” That fits Kevin Ollie perfectly. He’s a very well liked person everywhere and you never hear a negative thing about him. When talking to other recruits they all say they like him a lot and they all have a good relationship with Ollie. As for Richardson’s relationship with coach Ollie and the staff he said, “It’s good so far, still learning about the staff, but it’s progressing.”

We then talked some about his recruitment. He said he had offers from, “Arizona, Indiana, UConn, Florida, Miami, Ohio St., Minnesota, Rutgers, Seton Hall, SMU, and Cincinnati” with interest from,”North Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Syracuse.” However, a few hours after we talked he announced he had received an offer from Syracuse. He said that all of the schools are recruiting him as a shooting guard and that’s where he wants to play in the future. As for any kind kind of timetable to cut his list and commit, there is nothing currently set. However, he will be visiting a couple of schools soon. Those schools, “UConn at the end of this month and Indiana in August.” It will be interesting to see how his visit to UConn goes and how his recruitment goes in the future with all of the elite colleges on his list.
